The female-character-bashing isn't "unfortunate". It's misogyny. Slash shippers are perfectly capable of enjoying their ships without hating female characters in the process.

First, I think the source material is responsible for the way fans respond to the characters. Fandom mirrors the source material, and if the source material features mostly male characters, that's what the fandom is going to focus on.

Especially considering that not only are the main characters usually male (and when they aren't, the fandom tends to be het or femslash focused, and be more about the female characters, imagine that!) but even the minor characters, especially the ones with popular archetypal traits tend to be male as well.

Speaking of canons that usually have fandoms, that is.

Second, I think it's silly to judge people on the basis on what they ship. I can love a character without shipping them with anyone, I promise! I have several canons in which I don't even ship my favourite character. It's sad and confusing (and stupid) that one can be called misogynistic simply by not shipping a female character.

Ugh, this. I mostly hate it when people blame the lack of femslash on misogyny. I'm sorry, but fandom mostly consists of women. Most women (most people in general) are straight. Meaning most people in fandom are attracted to men, not to women. And while there are of course straight women who are also into reading/writing femslash, the majority of people who are only attracted to men will not find porn about two women particularly interesting. That is not misogyny, that's simple fucking logic. I don't like femslash, not because I dislike women, but because I don't find women attractive and don't want to read porn that does not feature a single person I find attractive.

(Choosing to take this seriously)

I agree with you, that labeling a focus on male characters and squeeing henceforth isn't misogyny (perhaps chauvinism is a batter word?). The bashing of female characters, however (and I do note that you qualified it as "unfortunate") I WOULD consider misogyny.

And a side question that comes out of your very generous offer (:p): do you consider everyone who enjoys any yaoi manga to be fetishing you? (because when I beam at the characters in, say, Crimson Spell and cheer for their romance, I do so not because it's two men, but because it's two people who are overcoming obstacles together and discovering how much they mean to each other. To some of us, the hearts and souls are the important part: the genitalia are incidental.

I honestly never saw people criticizing gay guys for wanting to concentrate on men, though. I mean, I make no secret of it for the same reason as you, as a gay person I'm not about to apologize for what I find attractive... but I feel it's more the straight females that are expected to show interest in female characters lest they be considered self-hating.

I don't get why you're going on about being a IRL yaoi though??? why does it matter you're asian.

I'm a woman sexually attracted to men (usually), but I ain't in fandom for the men.

I very much prefer to live vicariously through the adventures of other women. I therefore wish there was more women to focus on in fiction and fandom. Unfortunately, it's a self-perpetuating cycle; people focus more on the men because there aren't as many interesting women characters, and therefore fandoms give us more men to focus on because that's where all the attention is at.

Being gay doesn't make you special in this respect, especially with terming it "likely" mansplaining - there's nothing "likely" about it, anything more than misogyny is "unfortunate". And I bet that attitude follows you back into real life.

You go right on ahead and squeal over the flawless perfection of various guys, and continue to participate in the cycle as just another part of the problem.

99% chance this is a generic fan girl trolling and not even a dude or a POC at all, but sure, I'll use it as an excuse to rant or troll back. Because I freaking hate this argument.

I cannot even tell you how many times I have heard this exact same argument to "justify" bashing POC, people with disabilities, etc. etc. both fictional and in real life. "Oh, it's nothing personal, I just don't want to see their disgusting [ loathsome racial slur ] face every day, so I would never hire/vote for/befriend them, but I can't help what I find attractive!"

And yes, before I became an adult I never believed this could be used to justify hiring or political decisions, but it happens behind closed doors all the time, in my personal day to day experience. "Wouldn't want an ugly person of color with no sex appeal representing the company. Nothing personal, but white people just have the charisma we are looking for. We want to bedazzle the customers with some eye candy, here!"

Sorry, but it hurts, and hearing it all the damn time in real life, I am sick of it.

I might argue that you shouldn't cruelly bash another human being because you don't personally want to screw them, but I guess that's too much to ask.

So, dear troll, you wanted wank, and here you go. Nicely gift wrapped just for you! Although seriously, thanks for giving me an excuse to vent.

It definitely makes sense that fandom focuses on attractive men because it is mainly populated by straight women, no brainer. Also, what I've always loved about fandom is that it provides a forum and community for people, straight and queer alike, to talk about and express their interests and sexuality in a relatively accepting environment.

But focusing on hot guys is one thing. Writing diatribes about how any female love interest for one of those guys is an 'ugly stupid whore' with ulterior motives is another. Specifically, it's sexism at best and misogyny at worst. This doesn't mean that fandom doesn't have its great points - I actually think that the fact fandom is so self aware of issues like this is one of them, SJW and anti-SJW trolling aside. Instead, it just means that fandom doesn't exist in a vacuum (and couldn't by definition, and shouldn't), and therefore shouldn't be immune to criticism.

I primarily read slash online, but I'll read het if the story is excellent and/or hot. I don't give a squirt about femmeslash.

IDG the ruckus over misogyny. The amount of egregious female character-bashing is way overhyped, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between finding guys more attractive, and thus being more inclined to squee over the hotness of male characters, and bashing female characters just because they're female, though. Being attracted to men is fine and even focusing more on male characters is fine, but it's the people who hate all female characters, or hate them for traits that they overlook or applaud in male characters, or feel the need to call them bitches, sluts, whores, etc. that are the problem here.

I'm glad that you've found a place that's welcoming and accepting, and think that's awesome! But that space does sometimes need to be criticized for it's treatment of female characters or f/f romance.

I like your style, OP. That self-mocking little endnote makes me smile, and if only I were a hot guy I'd give you leave to objectify me in return.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Guys bashing other guys who get the women THEY want"

But that's not the same as "I want the two guys to be together, so the worthless female whore should just die". Many men who bash on other guys for "getting" the woman they were after are pissed the other guy got the prize and not them.
While many fangirls who bash the hardest on female characters are pissed at the female character just for existing and "ruining" the "secretly canon" gay ship.

You can't really compare the two.

Now, if guys would usually say "omg, this disgusting slut of a useless male char! I hope he dies of ass cancer for forcing femaleA and femaleB apart! He isn't a good char anyways because he is way too strong. I wish they'd kill him off in a very brutal way" THEN we could talk.

But otherwise... eh, I'm pretty sure I have never seen someone calling out a GAY DUDE who focuses a lot on hot male characters.
I only see women get called out on that.
So I don't even get why you think that fandom ISN'T perfectly functioning as your save space for all things sexy and male.

I simply can't believe that you get called a "misogynist" for being gay.
Because "why do you hate to FUCK women?" isn't the same as "why do you hate women?".

Nah, I disagree. I think pretty much all the straight girls in fandom who exclusively stick to slash have some internal misogyny going on. I mean, think about it: if m/m was that popular among straight women, it would be common in mainstream media. It isn't, though. Most women prefer to read/watch het relationships.

Straight slash fangirls are usually insecure because most of the time they aren't "cool kids." They might think they're not attractive enough or they might get bullied. That's why they read m/m and bash female characters. It makes them feel "safe," and they're able to vicariously get back at their bullies/society.
