I think this is kind of messy, so I'm gonna try to keep this simple.

You don't need to be attracted to women, enjoy femmeslash, or devote a lot of time to appreciating them. The people who demand de-facto percentages of "representation" are missing the point, and are doing little more than uselessly policing people.

However, there really is a problem when people just literally don't want female characters around at all, or cut them out of a male character's life in more complicated fanworks just because they're inconvenient.

Bashing isn't just "unfortunate", it's shitty, and it is the result of misogynist attitudes.

You don't have to devote yourself to writing lesbian sex or anything like that, but you should realize that if you only care about hot dudes and male relationships to the point of exclusion, then that still says something beyond the way you prefer to spend time in your happy place.

On the other hand, I also think it's unfortunate that people do tend to go out of their way to shame people for simply preferring men, and often blaming girls for things that are overarching social problems that they are targeted by.

But that is also policing people. You don't get to tell other people what they should and shouldn't care about in fandom. If someone is in it only for the hot dudes, why does that matter? Is it okay if someone is only in fandom for the hot girls? What if they're only in it for shipping in general? What about if they aren't interested in ships at all?

If someone's happy place consists exclusively of hot guys/hot girls/purple llamas, that isn't anyone else's business but their own. One of the biggest slash fans I've ever known was also a lesbian. Does she get a pass on it because she's attracted to women?

Judge people for bashing female characters, sure, if they're bashing them because they're female. Judge them for cutting female characters out of a male character's life in fanworks. But if someone wants to write an orgy fic with just the dudes from a canon, they have every right to do that without being judged for it.

I'm not telling them what they should and shouldn't care about, or saying that they need to have some quota of female inclusion.

Sorry if that last bit wasn't clear, but I do think that being all about hot dudes or hot girls or whatever floats your boat is fine. Hell, I read m/m slash almost exclusively, and I don't even feel guilty for it.

But if you just don't care about female characters at all, to the point where they hold absolutely no interest at all even in canon material, then maybe that's sitting down and thinking about
