Nah, I disagree. I think pretty much all the straight girls in fandom who exclusively stick to slash have some internal misogyny going on. I mean, think about it: if m/m was that popular among straight women, it would be common in mainstream media. It isn't, though. Most women prefer to read/watch het relationships.

Straight slash fangirls are usually insecure because most of the time they aren't "cool kids." They might think they're not attractive enough or they might get bullied. That's why they read m/m and bash female characters. It makes them feel "safe," and they're able to vicariously get back at their bullies/society.

Since when do women control mainstream media? Network execs, studio execs, and advertisers are the ones who decide what gets on TV. Sure, they're in for what sells, but they don't want to alienate other parts of they're audience. It is sort of becoming more mainstream as it becomes more accepted (or, at least, less stridently denounced).

And honestly, there are plenty of straight women that are fans of slash who don't bash female characters. What does being "cool" have to do with anything? Some of the people that bash do it out of insecurity, I'm sure. But I'm equally sure that some people bash because they like to do it (just like some bullies and trolls).

I knew someone was going to say something like this

But, honestly, if you took a poll of young straight women on whether they would prefer to read a straight or m/m romance, you would overwhelmingly see them pick straight.

DA

No shit? The world revolves around heterosexual relationships. Some people don't even know that m/m romance exists. Now I'm not sure if you live in a rock, stupid or just trolling.

A lot of straight young women haven't been exposed to a lot of m/m romance, though. Unless you're involved in fandom or know where to seek it out, it's not exactly easy to find. There's also the fact that women like m/m romance is seen as "icky" and has a lot of stigma attached to it (i.e. women who like it are "weird" or maybe even ~gay~ themselves... weird logic, but it does exist). I'm sure there are a fair number of straight women that would prefer het over m/m even if they had been exposed to more m/m romance, but there's a lot more than just preferring a het relationship over seeing two men together at play here.

lol what

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Right. And reading slash, het and femslash makes me what? Some kind of weird unicorn?

The reason why m/m is not in mainstream media is because of homophobia and misogyny. You really think they'll make gay relationships irl when you've got homophobic idiots running out screaming bloody murder when they see two guys on screen? Not to mention they can't even write women properly and this is 2013. Also, are you new or are you unaware of the fact that a lot of female bashing come from het fandoms or are you just ignoring this because of your slash hate-boner? I'm genuinely curious.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Female bashing in het fandoms has more to do with someone getting in the way of the ship than the fact that the character is female. It usually happens when you have a main guy and two pining girls. If the genders are flipped, people are going to bash one of the guys for getting in the way.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed it does. But it doesn't erase the fact that there's a lot of misogyny going on in there. When another character is being called a huge hoebag for being in the way of the relationship it still is misogyny. It's disgusting and there's no excuse for that.

I rarely see guys being "bashed" but whatever you say.

Damn, that's some bad armchair psychology.

A+ would lol again.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
No.

Just, no.

You do realize that many slash fangirls also like het, right? There's a lot of overlap between the two.
Now where's your theory?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I was talking about straight slash fangirls who exclusively like slash. If you go for het and slash, then you most likely care about character relationships more than just having your sausagefest.

IDK, man. Every straight slash fangirl who has only shipped slash pairings I've known has either flat-out hated female characters or had a subtle grudge against them.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Meet more people. I'm sorry for your ignorance.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Shouldn't it be the other way around though, that being open about liking something that's considered "deviant" means you're less insecure?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. I knew slash fangirls in high school. They told me they liked slash because I was just a "nerdy fandom kid." They weren't going to announce it to people they didn't know well.
