Why don't we look at the way Disney themselves did it when they 'humanized' the characters? The musical. The characters aren't human in it, but their costumes leave their faces and much of their bodies entirely exposed. And? They cast all black actors as the lions and continue to do so.

I don't think there's any solid reasoning for making the characters anything but black. And yeah I do think it's racist to make them white.
