Sad to see her go but I was glad that the Governor got back at Michonne even if he didn't necessarily intend it in such a way.

one of the Gov's apologists who thinks he's just a misunderstood man who loved his daughter.

It's Michonne's fault that it even happened.

Well, think of it as less "shoved in a fridge" and more "the writers finally realized they'd borked up her character past redemption and they just needed to cut their losses and write her out."

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree on the 'beyond redemption' thing, but yeah, they wrote themseleves into a corner with her and it was 'easier' to kill her off. :/

I don't mean 'in-universe' beyond redemption, but just writing-wise.

I always felt like the writers didn't really know what to do with Andrea's character. Granted they have trouble writing most women as living breathing real people on that show but...*sighs* It's a shame they decided to kill her when they wrote themselves into a corner.

I had a lot of problems with her death but I didn't see it as fridging. I think her death was motivated by the writers having no fucking clue what to do with her, the show-runners wanting to differentiate from the comics and the network giving in to a majority of vocal fans who wanted her gone. But yes, those were all bullshit reasons for killing her.

I would've felt less bad about her death if they'd written it vaguely plausibly. There was no way it should've taken her that long to pick up a pair of pliers with her feet and put them in her hand. I actually started to wonder if the actress had a hard time making it look difficult enough to warrant all the fumbling.

Mostly I felt like they wasted two characters who had just started to get interesting. RIP Milton.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same here. Andrea had really started to redeem herself and then Milton had finally grown some balls and they both got killed. That was a waste, I felt.

[personal profile] poisonenvy 2013-04-13 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, TWD community on Livejournal actually had a member tie herself up in a chair and pick up a pair of pliers with her feet, and she did it pretty quickly.

Ok seriously, "fridging" is a specific type of character death and not every female death qualifies for it, this isn't just directed at you OP but I seem to see this mistake all too often in fandom.

And Andrea essentially got a whole finale dedicated to her death, yeah it sucks that the writers put the character in a corner to the point that it was hard to redeem her, but they gave her 3 seasons, in a zombie show that is a long ass time and hardly a fridge.

I'm not saying the writers handled Andrea well at all, but her death was at least respectful and even as someone who is not a fan of her character, I found it sad.

B-B-BUT PATRIARCHY

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember an interview with the writers, where they basically said that she died to show how evil the Governor really is and to give Rick something to think about... that sounds like a textbook case of fridging for me?
(LJ is down for me right now and I only remember that interview being linked on ONTD so I can't search for it right now. :/)

I love Andrea in the comics and that's probably the reason why I could never really hate her (despite hooking up with Shane *facepalm* and the Governor *FACEPALM* and being generally stupid in season 3) and her death made me sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I believe I found the article you're talking about, and Kirkman doesn't explicitly say those are the reasons Andrea died, from the way I read it he was more talking about how Andrea's death will effect Rick, not that she died JUST SO Rick's character could be affected (and honestly why would it even be a huge deal to Rick? We've already had a season of Rick dealing with Lori's death.)

A character being effected by another characters death isn't necessarily fridging either.

I'm not saying she was killed off for the best of reasons, but I think she just went the way of many other characters in the show where the writers were just like, "Well, it's a zombie show."

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the viewers already know how evil the Governor is, and any emotional impact on Rick is negligible compared to how Lori's impacted on him.

This thing with Andrea simply doesn't qualify as a fridging. Andrea has had lots of characterization, actually. Not a lot that makes people like her or her choices, but it's there.

If anyone got fridged, it was Penny...

I agree, OP. I agree. I've had a love-hate relationship with Andrea ever since season one, and even at the times where I absolutely loathed her, I didn't want her to die. Lori on the other hand, I was glad to see her go.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, OP. She was so flawed and misguided, which I thought made her a great character. I don't care that she was "so much more badass" in the comics-- "more badass" doesn't sound interesting to me.

I don't mind that she died, but it pisses me off to no end that, LIKE LORI, she had to go out apologizing to the audience for her behavior.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
me too, op. andrea infuriated me this season, but that was some weak bullshit.
