I get how you can find this scene skeevy. Kirk's consent is called into question. I think Spock was doing it out of a place of love, but I guess the same could be said for Willow when she erased Tara's memories (which I still have problems with years later).

I don't think the two are equivalent. Willow erased Tara's memories to deceive her about shit she'd done.

Absolutely. What Willow did was self-serving, so that Tara wouldn't be mad at her anymore.

You were supposed to have problems with Willow erasing Tara's memory, it was very much shown in text to be the wrong thing to do. Tara was completely justified to be pissed at her because Willow was literally manipulating her and the whole thing was leading Willow down a bad path with magic.

I think a more comparable situation might be Doctor Who? When the Doctor took Donna's memories.

But wasn't that a life-or-death situation? (I don't watch the show though, so I'm not sure...)

I'm referring to the Doctor Who episode. (:

It was, Donna would have died if her memory wasn't wiped. But a lot of fans still took issue with the episode because Donna didn't really consent.

I wouldn't say it's 100% comparable it was just the first thing that came to mind for me, especially since OP was talking about Star Trek and the time it aired but it seems like Sci Fi still does a lot of those same things.

DA

It was life or death, BUT Donna repeatedly said that she didn't want to have her memories erased and basically begged him not to. I can sympathize with the doctor not wanting his friend to die, but that whole plotline left a really sour taste in my mouth.

True. Doctor Who would be a better choice in this situation.
