Maybe you could try one of the later Star Trek series if you haven't already? I don't blame you, op, I often get bored with some of the original episodes. The show isn't for everyone.

Um...that's not even remotely what the OP said...

I don't remember what happened in that scene. What was creepy about it?

Spock wipes Kirk's memory.

My memory of this one is fuzzy but I believe it's when some woman Kirk was into dies (and also turns out to be a robot or something?) and he's so broken up over it that Spock erases his memories (without asking if that's okay).

I'm not positive but I believe that is the scene where Spock melds with Jim and tells him to forget (Rayna Kopek, I believe). It's been awhile since I've rewatched the old series.

What's wrong with this picture?

not sure if troll...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't recognize the scene so I'm not sure what's going on here. Is he melding with Kirk while Kirk's unconscious, i.e. without Kirk's consent?

[personal profile] philstar22 2013-04-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. In that scene, Kirk is mourning a girl who just died (I believe she was an android who couldn't handle the emotions of choosing between Kirk and her creator). Spock wipes Kirk's memories so he forgets the girl.

You're not alone there. I was just watching "The Enemy Within", and the way they treated the scene between Evil!Kirk and Yeoman Rand was just full of OMFG.

The show is indelibly 1960s in some of its attitudes. :\

That scene is pretty painful to watch. It's interesting watching the series in current day and seeing things like that, given how progressive it was compared to a lot of shows at the time.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say Spock's little comment at the end of that episode was the worst, tbh. Like, did he just bring up Rand being sexually assaulted by an evil doppelganger on the bridge? WTF.

But immediately before that, Kirk's last words before he fell asleep were "I wish I could forget." It's easy to see how Spock would have read that as consent.

Is it the fact that it's an involuntary memory-wipe that causes dissonance? That's interesting, I'm not a fan of that device either, but it happens enough in modern media I've seen that I put up with it as an acceptable reality break and wouldn't have thought of it as a product of the past. (Maybe that says something about me or the stuff I watch...) Or, is it more the way it's treated textually/narratively that's different?

I'm partly curious because I'm also watching TOS for the first time (hi!) but I haven't seen that episode yet.

I don't understand why people are so squicked out by Spock "mind!raping" Kirk. As if that was the worst physical interaction between them. What single square inch of Captain Kirk's body hasn't been probed black and blue to sate Spock's fascination?

I get how you can find this scene skeevy. Kirk's consent is called into question. I think Spock was doing it out of a place of love, but I guess the same could be said for Willow when she erased Tara's memories (which I still have problems with years later).

This will probably be an unpopular opinion, given the "problematic" issues involved with unrequested mind-wipes, but....

I've always saw that as a profound act of mercy on Spock's part, and a measure of the friendship he had with Kirk, that he'd take away the painful memory.

And didn't Kirk just get done saying he wished he could forget or something? So it wasn't COMPLETELY non-con...right?

Bothered me too, OP. Bothered me too.

I just pretend it didn't happen. Kind of like how I pretend a lot of Turnabout Intruder didn't happen.

I am amused that in all this long discussion, no one brings up Superman wiping out Lois Lane's memories in the first Superman movie. Which, imho, was a whole lot worse.

Yup, I'm old.

The face-stretcher in Star Trek: Insurrection turned me off of Star Trek for life. It was my first ever exposure to anything Star Trek. I don't remember how old I was, maybe 5 or 6 years. It creeped me out. Looking back now, it's crappy CGI is apparent, but to my 6 year old self in the late 90s that was disturbing as hell. I've never had anything to do with it since. :/

What seems odd to me is that this was far from the only time this kind of thing happened to Kirk. Did he edit out Edith Keeler and Miramanee too, and we just never saw it?

For that matter, I'm not inclined to believe Spock would have chosen to forget Zarabeth - though I don't remember if this episode happened before or after that one, and it might have given him some perspective, depending.
