You're not alone there. I was just watching "The Enemy Within", and the way they treated the scene between Evil!Kirk and Yeoman Rand was just full of OMFG.

The show is indelibly 1960s in some of its attitudes. :\

That scene is pretty painful to watch. It's interesting watching the series in current day and seeing things like that, given how progressive it was compared to a lot of shows at the time.

I'd say Spock's little comment at the end of that episode was the worst, tbh. Like, did he just bring up Rand being sexually assaulted by an evil doppelganger on the bridge? WTF.

And don't forget Yeoman Rand doing a nice round of self-victim-blaming with her remarks about the fact that he's the Captain and she has to do what he says.

Ikr!!! I flipped out the first time I saw that scene, I was so mad. There are some really...uncomfortable moments of sexism on TOS that while I love Star Trek and know that it was filmed before I was born but I just can't sit through some of it without at least twitching.

Yeah :-\ Honestly, after seeing TNG and Voyager first, going back to TOS felt so... uncomfortable that I couldn't continue watching it.

That to me is the worst '60s' moment in the whole show. THAT IS NOT OKAY. I haven't watched it in years, but I remember being especially horrified at the way Rand was treated when she dared to accuse the Captain of improper conduct - like, that could never be possible so she would of course be lying - and then no one even properly apologises to her when they find out she was telling the truth! Like, the whole thing becomes a bit of a joke instead. Ugh.

Yeah. What also freaked me out too was that, if I remember correctly, they were stating how these people were just two halves of Kirk and weren't exaggerated. So it left me thinking, "So, what, Kirk has an inner rapist all the time?"

I think it was construed more as:

"Men (Kirk especially) keep control over their inner drives and express them in socially appropriate ways; absent this control, this is what happens."

However I should note that when men get asked questions about rape where the word rape isn't used, an eye-openingly significant percentage of men express they have done it and/or would if given the chance to do so.

So maybe the episode was prescient in the sense of holding up a mirror to men and saying, "This is your idol, the man on whose shoulders 435 lives rest. He is human, flawed, imperfect. Just like you. And just like you, if given the chance to behave inappropriately, he does. So it's all the more important to teach men not to rape."

I really like your interpretation. It's actually makes me feel a lot better than before. I guess I just don't like painting every man as a potential rapist, in a way. Like, great message, just, it paints men in a really weird light I can't get behind.

I don't know. I'm confused now.
