Public Health

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2013-04-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ok so shot in the dark.

To make a long story short, for a while I was really certain that I wanted to do laboratory work in the future, after getting experience in it I'm almost certain I don't want to do it at all.

I'm kind of interested in the field of public health because one of my goals for a career is more directly impacting other peoples' lives in a positive way, and it seems like an interesting career field. Is there anyone here who works in or had a degree in that field? What do you do, and do you enjoy it?

One of my friends works in the health dept at a college and since working there and taking a few classes has decided to get her masters in the field. She'd like to be a nutritionist and help others learn about healthier lifestyles.

Thanks!

I think I'm really interested in infectious/chronic disease and epidemiology. But cool that your friend is a nutritionist!

I'm currently getting a degree in Community Health and Epidemiology (which is the thesis-based version of a Public Health degree at my school). I'm more on the Community Health side of things, and I really enjoy it. I haven't had a full-time job in the field yet, but I have done contract work and had some experience with some of the health agencies where I live. Most of the work I've done has been on the research and program planning and evaluation end of things, but I'm hoping to get a community-based research job or a position with one of the local non-profits following graduation.

There are actually a variety of things that you can do with a Public Health degree, though I know people who work in biostatistics and epidemiology, people who work more on the evaluation or administrative end of health care, and also people who do research that is more interactive and community-based. There's a group of researchers (including students) in my department who are currently working with the city where I live to develop a strategy for creating healthier neighborhoods. There are some downsides to the degree, as with every degree, since there are a lot of places that want to hire biostatisticians or epidemiologists, but it's sometimes a bit harder to get a position if you're interested in non-quantitative research. Some health agencies (esp if they're government run) have a lot of bureaucratic red tape you have to deal with, too, and the health care industry isn't always the most open-minded when it comes to change. It's also a bit difficult to get things related to prevention funded sometimes, since a lot of people are more interested in the here-and-now than the long term. A lot of these issues aren't exclusive to public health, though, and you'd have to deal with similar things in a lot of fields or professional settings.

Is there any particular subject or type of research you were interested in?

I should add that some of the epi people I know do community-based research, as well, and quite a few of the people in my department do multi-disciplinary research and work with people in other fields. It's a fairly good degree if you enjoy working with other people from a variety of disciplines.

I know I'm not very interested in public nutrition. Never have taken a biostatistics class.

I just really want to help people in a direct way, but I don't have it in me to be a health practitioner (doctor/nurse/dentist etc.)I'm interested in having a job where I talk to a lot of people. I like infections and chronic disease and I guess epidemiology can be interesting, although I'm not really sure I want to work with a whole lot of numbers.

Basically right now I'm like: Biology + Interpersonal Communication/Networking + Helping Human Race - Doctor = ?

I'm mostly community health, like I said, but I did take an epi course and it was incredibly fascinating. I find biostatistics interesting, too, but I've always been more of a words than numbers person. Epi kind of functions as a middle ground in that regard, with obvious work with numbers that happens, but it's a different type than biostatistics, obviously. There are also some fields like social epidemiology, which can be pretty interesting. Since you're interested in infectious diseases, too, you might be interested in something like clinical surveillance? A lot of the epidemiologists that I know do a lot of community-based research and work with different programs and agencies, so there is the ability to directly affect change and (hopefully) improve people's lives. The healthy neighborhoods project that I mentioned is actually lead by an epidemiologist.

It definitely sounds like the field is something you would probably enjoy! There are some people who go into it wanting to go mostly into lab-based research, but the majority work in areas that are a bit more directly involved with the community and affecting change. I'd recommend looking into a few programs that schools in your area have and getting a feel for the work that students and faculty are doing.

Thanks!

I actually go to a school with a Public Health masters, so I'll look into it. I really want to do Americorps before I get a masters and I was wondering if Public Health was the area I wanted to plan to do in it so I'll go talk to some people because it does sound like something I might like!

Thank you so much <3

No problem! Americorps sounds like a great idea, actually. I know that my program (and several of the other Public Health programs that I'm familiar with) like students to have a bit of experience in the field. It's not a make-or-break factor when it comes to getting accepted, but it definitely doesn't hurt. It might also give you a better idea what the field's like on the ground before spending several years of your life working on a graduate degree.

Good luck! I hope you find a field that you enjoy to continue on in, even if it's not public health. ;)
