Advice?

[personal profile] mechanosapience 2013-04-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
My special-needs step-brother is pretty unambiguously an alcoholic. The problem is that my dad and step-mom think he just "hasn't learned his limit yet." I am concerned that, because alcohol consumption is normal for them, and because my dad's eldest sister has a habit of accusing anyone who drinks at all of being an alcoholic, they're not taking this as seriously as they should.

I've tried bringing it up, but I get shut down and the thing is that they keep enabling him: he's a legal adult, so they treat him like one with regard to alcohol, but mentally, he's a teenager at best. They realize this in other areas, like money, but I think they're such party people that discussion of alcoholism makes them defensive.

My step-brother has even asked me for help with this, but I can't make my dad or his mom understand that they really need to not be giving him booze and letting him go to bars. I'm concerned that between the drinking, his being special-needs, and his massive temper, he's going to wind up getting in serious trouble. I know I need to talk to them about this, but I need some advice on how to broach the topic such that I won't be shut down and won't just put them on the defensive.

I...don't know how to broach it, but maybe when it comes it up try comparing it him handling money? Like, if he can't be trusted to handle money responsibly, can he really be trusted to be mature enough to say 'I've had enough' when he's reached his limit? And maybe toss in that he's actually asked for help controlling it, so they know it's something that he also wants and not something you're randomly deciding?

Have you talked to them about it along with your brother? Perhaps him being there, admitting he needs and wants the help will help convince them.
