foreign clothing

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So recently my Korean friends gave me a hanbok as a present (a hanbok is traditional Korean clothing, nowadays mostly worn on holidays/at weddings, and I think they're super pretty).

Let's all be non-PC: got any clothing-from-a-culture-not-your-own? Anything you would love to have?

I have a Yukata and matching geta that I got as a going away present from the teachers at the High School where I worked as an English teacher. I haven't really had occasion to wear it since I left Japan, but I'm still glad I have it.

I used to have the pattern for an American-sized yukata. I wanted to make one myself originally for cosplay, but also because they just look so dang comfy and fun! Maybe someday... I really love traditional Japanese clothing in general :P (And a lot of their unique contemporary clothing, too, actually.)

My sister actually wears kimono as a hobby. She has tons of different pieces of kimono for all seasons, as well as boxes of the accessories and over a dozen pairs of geta/zori. Like, she has more full kimono outfits than regular clothes.
She evens dresses me and other people up for conventions, I don't look that good in them, but my sister has a decent sense of coordination!

I have a yukata that was hanging on my wall, but I took it down to move, and want to wash it before I put it back up... Speaking of which does anyone have tips on washing yukatas?
I want to get an Obi to go with it but I haven't found one I like. I also have tabi, and geta, kept on a shelf in the old house I haven't put up here yet.

I also have a huge squash blossom necklace I inherited from my grandmother.

And I have some Amish stuff too, but it's all boxed up at my patents place

If your yukata is 100% cotton, I would just put in the washer on delicate, or hand wash. And hang to air dry. But if you don't know or are paranoid, you could always dry clean it.

I'll have to go with dry cleaning I think, thank you.

I have a yukata and geta that I got for Tanabata when I was working in Japan. It looks awful on me but whatever lol

Ha yeah I wanted a yukata at some point during my brief weeaboo stage but I am pretty large-chested and curvy and I realize it one would look awful on me

My godparents brought me back a Sari from when they went to India, but I've never worn it properly. I'd love to have a kimono; I used to have some yukata's, for my school, but I've grown out of them, and it'd be nice to have a kimono. Or another yukata.

Also, geta! I want a pair so bad~ Especially the really tall ones, like Billy Bob Thorton wears in Princess Mononoke. :D

If I could get anything, though, I really want a cheongsam/qípáo, or a shirt based on that style, but I've never found one in my size. :(

I have a yukata+zori I bought in Japan a while back.
Also, I own a gorgeous red sari my grandmother gave me, which she bought when she lived in India about 50 years ago.

I used to own a yukata back when I lived in Japan, but it was like elementary-school sized so I don't have it anymore. Maybe my mom has it stored away somewhere, but I doubt it...

I love saris, but I'd never wear one unless I moved to India or something and had somewhere appropriate to wear it. I also love the more casual salwaar kameez, and I swear I've been seeing the tunic style top more and more in both fashion and on random people IRL over the past year or so.

I wear jeans. I don't know where it came from, but it certainly didn't come from my country.

I also used to have yukata (two, in fact), but I lost them in a house fire last year :( I haven't bought a new one yet and I'm not sure I'm going to, since even living here I never wear my own. The neighboring town has a Kimono Day I go to every year, but I rent a kimono when I do.

I do have a super fucking cute Hello Kitty jinbei, though. I wear it to festivals. It's by far the most comfortable outfit I own.

Aw, and I just remembered I also lost a really pretty shirt from Morocco.

When I was in Indonesia for my job, I got a chance to buy a really gorgeous batik top, with a sort of Indonesian flavored cut to it. I haven't had much of a chance to wear it as yet, though. Mostly 'cause I never really get dressed up all that often.

When my husband and I got married, we took wedding pictures traditional Chinese style. I wore a red cheongsam (I think that's what it's called?). We had to sit side by side and look serious, teapot in his hand and a fan in mine. It was pretty cool.

I have a few salwar kameez from my childhood. Sure they remind me of some really messed up stuff but they're also really intricate and pretty and I like looking at them. Maybe someday I'll give them to a little girl so she can pretend to be a princess in them like I did.

I'm kind of addicted to Folkwear patterns, so my "foreign" stuff is all made by me and not completely authentic.

I had a kimono but I gave it to my friend. When I went to Japan, I also bought a women's hakama, socks, and stage waraji made out of rope. I intended to use them for Bleach cosplay, but the Hakama was a skirt type, and I didn't realize that until later. I'm saving it for a Summer Wars cosplay instead.

My orchestra is going to India and they got our measurements to make us "Indian-style concert clothing", whatever that means. Hopefully it's clothes you're allowed to play a concert in that don't seem to exist for express purpose of raising your body temperature as much as possible? That would be awesome!

On a completely different note, when I was a kid I was in a production of The Mikado where all the girls wore ugly bathrobes, and it was awful.
