I wish I could help you OP, I am pretty good at making friends in Real Life and I suck at making friends online. I never know how one does it? It was easier when I were younger, and didn't over think stuff... Though what seems to work is to comment on stuff, engage in conversations and try to respect other peoples opinions.

Why can't I just use my Real Life Friend Making Techniques Friends Makingpatent pending to make friends online?

I'd kill for having a copy of your technique, because I suck at making friends on real life, but are quite good at making friends online.

I shall try to give you some pointers then: 7

Though I don't know your situation, most of my tricks is used in school situations, though I assume workplaces are pretty similar.

1. Talk to other people whom seem to be alone
2. Find some common ground: The weather, something in the news or whatever reality show/celebrity/local event is happening at that moment.
3. Makes sure you are smiling and laugh easily
4. Don't hide behind books and similar, be approachable
5. If you hear an group discussion, try to join in if you have something worthwhile to say.
6. Don't be afraid, most people (in my experience) like to get to know new people.
7. Be available and say yes if someone invites you to do something, even if it might not be your favourite thing in the world.
8. Talk about things you know something about
9. Ask questions and listen to the answers, especially if it is something they can teach you.
10. Be polite and helpful
11. Ask if they want to go shopping or to the cinema with you, especially if you both find some common ground that are related to those activities. Art Museums and local events are also great things to invite people to go with you.
12. Be open about about yourself, share of your experience and knowledge.(though not too open, medical and major personal issues are more of a thing you talk to when you know the new person a bit better)

I think that is what I got? I probably forgot something, but after going to about 10 different schools and living in my 42 home I think I got the getting to know new people thing down.
