(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 04:17 am (UTC)(link)Also, on the broken wrist thing. Yes the Doctor was acting like a child and what River said about hiding her own weakness from him was problematic, but I think in that moment the issue was that the Doctor had asked her to find a way not to break her wrist. So that you could prove that time could be rewritten, even if it had already been written down. When she failed to do so, she wasn't just hiding the fact that she was injured or mortal. She was hiding the fact that she couldn't change time. And the Doctor was upset about that because he realized that meant he would lose Amy and Rory. So, for whatever that's worth.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 04:58 am (UTC)(link)Also, hi there new fan! I love seeing new fans :) Hope the nutzoid fandom doesn't turn you off -- it's like the little girl who had a little curl. How d'you like this silly crazy wonderful show so far?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 05:10 am (UTC)(link)And thanks for the welcome! Well, I mainlined the entire seven seasons of New Who so far, so yes I loved them! I got really attached to Nine and then Ten, so it took me a while to warm up to Eleven, but I love all the Doctors I've seen so far. I haven't really gotten into Classic Who yet, mostly because the 26 seasons thing is sort of daunting and I wouldn't know where to begin. But I love what I've seen so far! The show is campy as anything but I love that it really makes you care and is also just a lot of fun.
I haven't gotten too involved in the fandom yet. It seems like most of the LJ comms are pretty quiet these days. I've found a few blogs to follow on Tumblr, but that's been about it. I haven't gotten too scared off by anyone yet, so that's good!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 06:53 am (UTC)(link)The fandom's generally easier to enjoy when you take everyone's opinions with a grain of salt, because it's all so very personal in this show, given how many different combinations of different characters there are to choose from, and people's tendency to complain about the combinations they don't connect with as much for being ~wrong. ;)
You don't need to worry about the Classic series unless you get genuinely curious about exploring it. Some old fans turn their nose up at new fans who haven't seen the old series, but even as an old fan myself I think that's silly because 1) it's loooooooong and 2) IMO the new series does a very good job of playing out so that the old series can work as extra backstory that adds more dimensions to the backstory mentioned in the new series, but doesn't really change the meaning of anything in the new series.

And if the line had been, "Under the circumstances, I didn't want him to know," you'd have a point. But that's not what she said. She said NEVER let him see the damage. That means never, under any circumstances; not just the one we're in right now. You have to stay young and uninjured for him. And that is FUCKED UP.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 05:16 am (UTC)(link)I'm not really sure where the aggressive tone of your comment is coming from; disagreeing strongly with what River said? Well, that's fine I suppose. I don't really agree with it either, I was just pointing something out that seemed to be overlooked.

Ah, fair enough.
And my aggressive tone comes from the fact that I've been a DW fan since the early 80's and I hate what Moffat is doing to it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 05:33 am (UTC)(link)Well, that's fair too! I'm by no means a longtime fan, but even I can see a marked difference between Moffat's Who and even RTD's, and what little I've seen of Classic Who. So I can see where you're coming from.
