"Slightly triggering."

Let me guess: nobody sat with you at lunch in high school so now you have a self-diagnosed psychological condition.

You cannot be "slightly triggered" no more than you can slightly fall down a well.

If you slightly fall down you stumble. What would be the word for slightly triggered? Like if you only have one quick flashback, or only start to shake a little bit, nothing drastic.

Hense the well analogy rather than stumbling.

...I think if you had a goddamn flashback it's more than slight.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, I've had slight flashbacks. Like really fast ones that I can shut down before it gets out of hand. Full on triggering for me is getting lost in the flashbacks and losing control.

Ah, okay. I don't think that's the standard use of the term, though?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You clearly have no clue about how flashbacks work, so why not shut the fuck up?

I'm sorry. Did you have a flashback to when you lost an argument and had to resort to lame insults because you couldn't provide any relevant information?

Triggered. Those are drastic, atypical reactions, nothing 'slightly' about them.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I have arachnophobia. When I see a spider IRL I start sweating and feeling uneasy OR I get a full on panic attack and start crying. In both situations I'm still triggered. But one has a less bad outcome than the other.
So why not use "slightly" in combination with the word "triggered"?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

You either are triggered or you aren't. There is no slightly.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
In theory, if someone had one trigger related to something bad which happened to them, and another trigger related to something indescribably awful that happened to them, it would not be unreasonable to refer to events meeting the first category as "slightly triggering".

My guess is that in this case it would be more appropriate to say it has bad associations, brings up bad feelings, sends a bad message, etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Let me guess: you've had something bad happen to you and think because of that you can dictate and assume what other people's problems are.

Different people experience different things.

Abuse triggers in this comment

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-04-16 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think triggers can be of varying severity. A few days ago when I read the Rihanna "Stay" secret, I felt so shaky that I had to write a two-page stream-of-consciousness opinion of abusive relationships, but after that I was completely functional. I've also pulled over to the side of the road to sob, then drive home and go to bed when that song came on the radio because I remembered when I came home from the hospital and he made me a candle-lit dinner with roses and a bunch of fancy stuff. I think different people are affected by different triggers in different ways.

Also, what the hell is that thing in the left corner of your icon and why have I never seen it before?

Short answer, this guy.

Long answer, read homestuck. It's on a hiatus that will last at least 2 months most likely, perfect time to catch up.
