"Slightly triggering."

Let me guess: nobody sat with you at lunch in high school so now you have a self-diagnosed psychological condition.

You cannot be "slightly triggered" no more than you can slightly fall down a well.

If you slightly fall down you stumble. What would be the word for slightly triggered? Like if you only have one quick flashback, or only start to shake a little bit, nothing drastic.

In theory, if someone had one trigger related to something bad which happened to them, and another trigger related to something indescribably awful that happened to them, it would not be unreasonable to refer to events meeting the first category as "slightly triggering".

My guess is that in this case it would be more appropriate to say it has bad associations, brings up bad feelings, sends a bad message, etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Let me guess: you've had something bad happen to you and think because of that you can dictate and assume what other people's problems are.

Different people experience different things.

Abuse triggers in this comment

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-04-16 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think triggers can be of varying severity. A few days ago when I read the Rihanna "Stay" secret, I felt so shaky that I had to write a two-page stream-of-consciousness opinion of abusive relationships, but after that I was completely functional. I've also pulled over to the side of the road to sob, then drive home and go to bed when that song came on the radio because I remembered when I came home from the hospital and he made me a candle-lit dinner with roses and a bunch of fancy stuff. I think different people are affected by different triggers in different ways.

Also, what the hell is that thing in the left corner of your icon and why have I never seen it before?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. You're one serious piece of human shit.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If by 'triggered' you mean "Boy, I'm annoyed by this character and I think I'm going to co-opt a real term for real issues to try and guilt people into hating/not talking about a character I don't like", then, I can practically see the little lever being pulled.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Feeling slightly uncomfortable with someone's negative traits =/= being triggered.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Does slightly triggered just mean she makes you uncomfortable?

My advice: stop watching the show.

I think you are using triggering incorrectly, but I agree with the sentiment. It got to point where I couldn't stand to watch that show because the characters actions are so awful and mean-spirited in a completely unfunny way. I mean, it's a stupid fucking show in the first place, but it's also painfully mean. This applies to most characters, not just her.

I thought most people liked the ginger?

The lesson here?

If you're going to use a buzzword in your secret, make sure you're using it correctly and plausibly or no one will pay attention to anything else.

Anon, I totally get how some in-show characters can be so gratingly annoying you just want to shut the show off but can't because the rest of it is so awesome. I feel this way about Laura Roslin and Gaius Baltar, but I don't call it "triggering", for God's sake.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this sentiment. She's such an angry, unpleasant character. I always wondered how her and Beck stayed in a relationship when she's so bitchy.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! I couldn't believe the episode where she gave Victoria something that she was allergic to so she couldn't be in the play. I mean, wtf? She never gets in trouble for her crap, either, which just pisses me off.
/way too many feelings about a kid's show.

I didn't like how bad she got. I think she was okay when she was just spilling coffee on people but the episode with the blood donating and stuff just annoyed me.

That said, I liked her in the beginning because she was a bitch who had the guy who loved her and I love that.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I swear, there were several times when I just wanted to give her a good ass beating when she tried to act "tough".

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. I liked that Jade was kind of unapologetically horrible. But as far as I remember it was primarily to Tori, right? I remember episodes of her being nice to Andre and Cat. She was mean to Robbie on occasionally but mostly his puppet, and Tori's sister. She seemed to have a soft spot for Cat. I remember toward the end of the series there was one ep with Jade trying to find out what was up sith Cat, and quite a few with her being marginally nicer to her. I think the writers played up a lot of what Jade did to Tori since Tori was the main character and therefore the audience was supposed to feel sorry for her because honestly Jade was pretty much the only thing "bad" in her life, unless I'm misremembering. Some of the stuff Jade pulled was drastic, such as the blood donation someone else mentioned, but on the dance episode I think it was just as wrong for Tori and the others to let some diaper-clad man to carry Jade out of school with her possibly kicking and screaming, can't remember if she was or not. But it was played for laughs because the audience is supposed to be happy that Tori got the better of Jade. In other words, I think the show had a lot of issues with what was "funny" and what wasn't.

And as far as she and Beck goes I think there were all kinds of problems there, and not just on her end. I remember an ep where he and Andre insult her even though he's been with her for over a year at that point. And a few other instances of him and girls, such as when he's fixing a car or driving Tori to school. I loved that she and Beck were together but I really think Beck needed to work out some issues too.

And that is way too much thought going into a kid's show. :o

"In other words, I think the show had a lot of issues with what was "funny" and what wasn't. "

i've found this to be true of way too many of nick's live action comedy shows, but ymmv

like, i want to like them, but... yeah, not funny! :/

belacqua: (teen wolf | like a girl)

[personal profile] belacqua 2013-04-16 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
She's my favorite, but I recognize that she's really messed up. It just makes her interesting to me. I definitely felt like they took it too far in the later seasons though. That blood donation episode was horrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't the blood donation ep from one of the early seasons though? The one with the steamboat play? Also, from that episode I found it ridiculous when Tori's sister got tuberculosis for a play. It was annoying and unfunny.

That said Jade is pretty much my favorite character on the show, despite the violent episodes. She kind of reminded me of Sam from iCarly but without the juvie. I kind of wish the show had been more of an ensemble piece and we got to see more of the other characters' lives. Just to get more of a balanced reading on them. They kind of did that in a couple episodes but it was primarily Tori and how Tori viewed/interacted with the others. But I liked that she was messed up and it was acknowledged that she was and such. But ymmv so…::shrug::

I assumed by triggered maybe the op has had bad experiences with a girl like Jade, who for all intents and purposes was a bully. I can see how watching some of the stuff she pulled on them especially Tori might be hard for someone who has been rl hurt by someone like that who maybe also got away with it. idk.

[personal profile] lector 2013-04-16 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
all i can think about is why a good chunk of the responses to this secret focus on the "slightly triggering" thing instead of the actual content of the secret.

is everybody on here always so nitpicky?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
it's because "trigger" is a term that is so frequently misused in fandom spaces, this secret being an example.

there is no such thing as being "slightly" triggered. as one of the above anons said, you either are triggered or you aren't triggered. if you are having the physical and psychological reactions, you have been triggered. adding a modifier like "slightly" just furthers the misunderstanding of what triggers actually are.
