90% Squall/Rinoa? Admittedly I haven't been in it for ages, but when I was, it was 90% slash.

Also, yes, the writing for that particular romance was so awful that it hijacked the rest of the game and more or less ruined it. I honestly think that if the game had carried on with the same themes post-second disc instead of spinning off into romaaaaance in spaaaaaace it would be as well-regarded as other Final Fantasies.

Eh, I dunno about that. There's so much that I just couldn't buy. "Oh, we were all in the same orphanage and Edea was our matron? And now by seemingly random chance we're all together again? WOW!" "Edea is evil...OH WAIT she's just being controlled by Adell! ...OH WAIT Adell is just being controlled by Ultimecia!"

It was kinda like, "were you people roleplaying this as you went and just making shit up?"

Possibly true, but all of those reveals came post-second disc as well. That... really did not seem to be where the game was going with its themes up until that point. There's an almost audible clutch grinding as the game shifts gears at the start of disc three when (regardless of whether not the player has been choosing dialogue options that suggest otherwise) Squall goes from "goddamn I have so many responsibilities and I have to babysit a civilian, ugh" to "RINNOOOOOA I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOOOOUUUU" in the space of less than five minutes.

That to me reads as some find OOC in the makes. They were roleplaying, but then went OOC and loved their version.

Yeah, the romaaaaaaaaance in spaaaaaaaace kind of did it for me. I replayed the game recently, having not touched it in about a decade - I remembered nothing of the plot from when I played it as a teen, so I was quite happy when I replayed and was really enjoying it!... Then I got to disk 3, and realised that my positive impression of the game was probably, in retrospect, going to mainly be a positive impression of the first two disks. AND THEN THEY WENT INTO SPACE
