I guess we run in pretty different fandom circles, then -- because in my corner it's mainly Seifer/Squall (which is my personal FF8 OTP).

Well, I imagine most of the shippers are simply there because they *are* the main couple.

But I couldn't tell you what makes the pairing work for them otherwise.

I'm not in the fandom and didn't finish the game (because I lost my memory card *sobs*), but I think I did sort of ship Squall/Rinoa back when I was playing it. I'm not really sure why. Maybe because they're both hot? Idk, sorry.

One thing you need to remember when wondering why people ship something is that canon doesn't always matter in any way, shape or form. Sometimes people ship things just because. Though, if it's at around 90%, canon probably did have something to do with it somehow. Is there any meta you could read?

EDIT: Oh, was it actually canon? Sorry, I misread. And misremembered it seems.

I should just never comment on secrets about canons I can't even remember.

yeah i don't get it either

it's sad because imo square did a better job at romance with ff7 and ff9, but then this game (which was more or less billed as a romance) just sucked at it and by the end i hated everyone except

ok no i hated everyone

what affection i had left for squall/rinoa by the 3rd (2nd?) disc was destroyed during the ragnarok sequence with "eyes on me" because christ that was just terrible

the ultimecia/rinoa theory (which is canon because i said so and also because dissidia) improves my opinion of this game and pairing substantially tho i gotta say

I think it's partly because they're the main couple, and partly because the game throws so much of them at you that if you like them at all, it's hard not to push things to make them work.

There's a lot of really cute moments between them that, imo, do end up lacking any sort of romantic chemistry, but do build quite the history between them.

It also helps that they're both pretty easy to project onto, and that Squall has even less chemistry with Selphie and Quistis, on the het side of things. When it comes to slash, I mostly see people having Rinoa dump Squall post-series.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
God I can't stand those two.

90% Squall/Rinoa? Admittedly I haven't been in it for ages, but when I was, it was 90% slash.

Also, yes, the writing for that particular romance was so awful that it hijacked the rest of the game and more or less ruined it. I honestly think that if the game had carried on with the same themes post-second disc instead of spinning off into romaaaaance in spaaaaaace it would be as well-regarded as other Final Fantasies.

I thought the fandom was all Seifer/Squall and Seifer/Zell. If people are into Squall/Rinoa, it might be because the relationship isn't really developed fully even though it is canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea either about the Rinoa/Squall pairing myself. I always want whatever the writers were smoking to think they were a good, romantic pairing. My personality is pretty similar to Squall's and I couldn't stand (not quite hate, but I sure was disappointed when I to rescue her in outer space) Rinoa w/a passion mostly b/c of the forced (and I do mean forced) romance angle and game time given to her--I thought she was fine in limited doses. I found it hard to think Squall would be romantically interested in her--friends, fine. Romantic partners, lol no.

I can only speculate that it was a case of opposites "attracting" that people find interesting/romantic.

Ugh, I hate this ship. I like both characters fine (okay, I hated Rinoa at first but she grew on me somehow) but I really can't stand this ship.

But uh, from what I've seem, most people don't like this ship so idk what corners of this fandom you've been hanging out in. Tell me so I can avoid them. :|

Interesting. I just remember the huge amount of Rinoa bashing when I went into fandom. I took a few looks, turned around, and never looked back. At least you like both characters.

Um, but, you know, you don't have to get it. There are a lot of ships out there I have no interest in and that's okay. I don't know why people like it and that's fine. So I don't know. Are you hoping for someone to explain why they like it? Because it's probably because they like the dynamic. What you find boring they find interesting. That's taste and everyone's tastes are different.

IA mostly, I love these two to death but I can't get behind the relationship lasting past the end of the game. I wouldn't call them boring, just...ill-advised? They don't so much have chemistry as they do embody eachother's issues.

I didn't get this pairing. To be honest, I didn't get the game in general (as said above, so much random OMG what a COINCIDENCEs, someone controlled by someone controlled by someone, totally not understanding what was going on half the game, etc..) but this pairing..? It honestly felt like Squall didn't like Rinoa, was annoyed by her whenever she tried to flirt with him and shut her down ("get off my lap" or something like that in the spaceship). And then, all of the sudden, he likes her? And furthermore, the game was obsessed with Squall, everyone and their mother wanked over him. Protagonist aside, he was a dick, and even the leader of his school handed all the controls to him. And the "development" of Squall and Rinoa overtook the more interesting characters. I loved how in FFVII, everyone had a quest, a time in the party when you needed to use them, and developed backstories. But I can't remember that at all from VIII.

feelings. D:

Honestly I've always been a big fan of all the ways they wouldn't work. I'm an awful person who really likes the idea of them actually realising they're incompatible personality-wise (awfully likely), but they end up stuck together forever because of the sorceress/knight thing, then blah blah blah tragedy tragedy. But I like them being cute and bickering their way into a happy ever after too, couldn't really tell you why.

Also adding to the "where the fuck have you been looking?" crowd, because last I checked the fandom was about 75% Rinoa bashing and 50% slash.

Because Rinoa is good with people, and was the first person who saw him for the scared kid he was instead of just standoffish.

What most people seem to forget is Squall is not cold because he's an ass: it's a defense mechanism so he doesn't get hurt by being abandoned again. After his outburst in Galbadia, Rinoa realizes there's something more going on with him while everyone else is reeling from him even showing emotion. So Rinoa reaches out and pushes and pokes in the right ways to get him to open up, which is something NO ONE ELSE ACTUALLY DID. They wrote him off as, "He's just cold." "It's just the way Squall is." Rinoa was the first to seek the source since she wasn't raised in Garden and so knew there had to be something more going on--whereas everyone else had their own pathologies and psychological problems.

I think the waltz scene basically sums it up.
It's because Squall is that cold and aloof guy who never opens up to anyone. But then Rinoa is like this outgoing girl who wants to open him up, almost to the point of being too pushy. It's that whole opposites attract/defrosting the ice prince trope that Japanese games/stories/anime/manga like to use. And whoever can open him up gets to be his love interest.
I dunno, I just personally find it cute because I grew up with those stereotypical Asian tropes about the cold aloof guy and the one girl who tries to break through his tough shell *shrug*.

[personal profile] perihadion 2013-04-16 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like it probably has something to do with the fact that it is explicit canon so people looking for something to ship need go no further; and also the fact that she set out to change him and open him up as a person, succeeded, and grew herself without expecting or meaning to in the process -- which is really romantic however you slice it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that sort of squicked me out about those two was the whole FATE!!! AND!!! DESTINY!!! angle - oh no, Laguna and Julia couldn't be together, but it's okay, because their kids with other people will eventually get together how romantic!1!1!!!11!!!

I just can't process that as being ~romantic~ D:

I'm glad I'm not the only one who got an Edward/Bella vibe to the pairing.

I like Rinoa, but Squall less so... I found him to be the most insufferable protagonist of a game I've ever played, even though I've reassessed the plot 10 years later, and realized he did have a reason for acting the way he did.

But then again, the plot for FF8 made absolutely no sense, and the forced romance was an icing on an already sketchy looking cake to me.
altair: (Default)

[personal profile] altair 2013-04-16 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a few parts of their relationship over the course of the game were lost in translation (moving from high-context to low-context), in addition to all of the cultural commentary. From what I remember, there were a lot of subtle hints before it became super obvious, but you could see the direction their relationship was going in from miles away regardless. You can even tell he liked her all along, but was in denial and tried hard to push her away (his reactions towards her just made it more obvious). I think Squall's romantic feelings for her weren't sudden; it was actually a slow build-up if you knew how to read between the lines (which is kind of easy to do in Japanese).

I also felt that there were a couple other similarities between them that's hard to point out in the NA version. For example, they are both very blunt and honest (for Japanese standards); Rinoa was just actually vocal about it. There were definitely some other things I can't remember, or didn't understand entirely.

But while I thought their relationship made plenty of sense, personally, it was just not very interesting, mostly because I've seen that formula plenty of times elsewhere.
