The thing that sort of squicked me out about those two was the whole FATE!!! AND!!! DESTINY!!! angle - oh no, Laguna and Julia couldn't be together, but it's okay, because their kids with other people will eventually get together how romantic!1!1!!!11!!!

I just can't process that as being ~romantic~ D:

Uh, no. Julia may have pined for Laguna, but Laguna moved on and happily married Raine and then got caught up in circumstances because he has a habit of acting before thinking things through and ended up in a position where he couldn't get back to her right away. Next thing he knows, she's died and he has a kid somewhere, but the ending shows him STILL regretting not going back to Raine. Not Julia--Raine. So no, Rinoa and Squall is NOT Julia and Laguna by proxy. It's meant to be one of those funny coincidences where their parents dated for a bit, then moved on to other, happier things and then they got together by pure chance.
