Yeah, I really thought while playing the game again some time ago, that the relationship seemed incredibly forced by those around him. The way everyone and their dog went "Oh Squall, you and Rinoa would make such a great pair" - "Don't be shy, you wuv her" was really creepy and especially the big leap from "Still don't really care" to "I WANT TO HEAR HER VOICE AGAIN WAAAHHH RINOA" was quite jarring. I guess it might have been some lost in translation issues, but I don't think that was all, it was just plain badly written in parts as well.
