It's hard to put into words. Partially because it's too common for the physical manifestation of something to be a gorgeous woman, which I find kind of icky. The thing you use, the thing that is your tool, and it's too common to see that human manifestation as someone who is, quite frankly, fuckable. It just brings up negative parallels to me about what people think of when they see a beautiful woman.

I really agree. Especially with all the gross, misogynistic overtones in the dialogue - calling her "sexy" and trying to drum up sexual chemistry and use lots of sexual connotations, etc. Combined with the fact that the TARDIS is, first and foremost, a vehicle - a thing that is used and, as you said, a tool - and that the human manifestation is a beautiful woman who is extremely unhinged... well, it's nasty as fuck.

To be honest, I was shocked when I remembered/realized it was Gaiman who wrote that episode - I thought for sure it had been Moffat, since it's completely his (awful, disgusting, horrible) style. It really made me lose A LOT of respect for Gaiman.

Off-topic, but I find it impressive how, when something bothers you about how a show portrays women, you can always explain in detail what the problem this, in a way that other posters understand (and usually respond intelligently to.) I see a lot of arguments on this site related to women and media, but they tend to be less fiery in threads with you in them.

Who, me? Me, specifically? Wow. Thank you. I'm kind of surprised that I've gotten into so many debates regarding these kind of things that someone remembers this. Anyway, I'm quite jazzed over the compliment. Thank you!

On the one hand, I agree with what you're saying in general...but the TARDIS was never presented as just a tool, at least not since the earliest episodes. As far as I know, the Doctor has always talked about and treated her like a person, as many companions have pointed out. ("You like that box more than me!" "She's not just a box! ...there there love, don't listen to what the nasty human is saying about you." [this is not a direct quote])

Well, yeah, but you could extrapolate that in the way people feel about their old car or house. Many people grow very attached to the things they've owned for a long time, but the TARDIS has always been a vehicle that, as far as anyone knows, had no true mind or consciousness.

Besides that, Idris was a casting/writing choice. They could have chosen to make her look like a little wizened woman or a very young child or something, and each of those choices would have implied something else about what the TARDIS "is".

It doesn't bother me in an in-universe sense, as no one chose Idris' body, but rather it bodies me that Gaiman chose to characterize the TARDIS as a lovely woman the Doctor flirted shamelessly and was also out of her gourd.

There was also the fact that before the TARDIS' soul was put into that body, there was another living being in there, and that's pretty much glossed over. A person died so the Doctor could have his TARDIS look like a sexy woman to flirt with. For a show that goes on about how EVERY living being is important, that seems kinda sketchy. Like, we're just ignoring the death of someone so the Doctor can do some flirting... how lovely.

The TARDIS has been "she" for a long time - because she's a ship, and ships are - but I would have loved older woman TARDIS (she's "old girl", ffs).
