Not really the way I would have phrased it, but basically this?

Dirk is super manipulative, even of his close friends, confident to the point of arrogant about his own abilities, and frankly is pretty self-centered.

Dave is a guy who's kind of an attention whore and spends more time keeping up the appearance of a funny coolkid than being honest about his feelings. Keeping up the appearance entails making shitty jokes and being generally a douche.

Whichever one you like best depends on your own personal perspective, but don't try to pretend one of them is way better than the other. They're very different characters.

Unfortunately, while knowing is half the battle, he seems to lack the wherewithal to change, which is the other half.

Dirk always seems kind of bland to me. I dunno. I'm not fond of the alpha kids in general so I automatically have a bias, but...idk as a Dave fan, Dirk's just never been an appealing character.

I find it mindboggling that anyone could think that Dirk is anything but an overhyped character product of the kind of self-complacent escapist fantasy that makes most action movies unwatchable.

But that's just me.

I saw it pointed out somewhere -- maybe fic, I don't know -- that emotionally speaking, Dirk is a lot more similar to Rose. Kind of a control freak, dissects people's motivations, attempts to detach to an almost pathological extent, very analytical, buries vulnerabilities and tries to pretend they don't exist, usually doesn't acknowledge when they're in over their heads...

Oh great, the Dave vs. Dirk debate. Why do I keep seeing this argument come up? It's stupid. They're both interesting characters in different ways, and it's not that hard to see why one would appeal to some people more than the other.

And can't we all agree that Roxy is superior to both of them?

Dirk's gotta tattoo but who knows what hidden shame Dave may be hiding in the sord pile (which doesn't stop from getting taller)

Eh. I'm not that fond of either of them, tbh.
Roxy is my favorite of any of the kids, and Karkat is my favorite HS character in general.

But everyone has their own preferences, so I don't find any of it "mind-boggling."

They're really very different people though?? Like, I guess that they look a lot similar but the only similarities in their personality comes from Dave trying to be a lot like Dirk I think. I agree with what someone above me said, that Dirk far more similar to Rose than he is to Dave. Aside from that they have strikingly different personalities.

I think Dave is easier for more people to relate to than Dirk is, so that probably helps.

I love how ridiculous the picture in the bottom right looks. Look at that tattoo, and that gas mask, and those sunglasses. It's like, he's probably doing something action-y there, but what the hell is attached to his body.

I like 'em both? Like people pointed out up-thread, they have different personalities. They are different people, with different likes and fears and so on, so comparing them seems kind of moot?

I admit I find Dirk (and the alpha kids) a bit more interesting on a psychological level (like you can really see why they are "screwed up"), but can see why Dave (and the beta kids) are more likable. Anyway, those are my 2 cents.
