I assume it's just that being a teacher is one stereotype for a childless woman (maybe because it was a job that was traditionally done by women before many married women worked?). And teachers can have a bad reputation in children's fiction (so many strict, old, boring, vindictive fictional teachers who hate kids), but that's not really true of Harry Potter since so many of the characters are teachers and they all have different personalities. And it's definitely not true of McGonagall, even if she is a bit strict.

Yeah...in like 1915. I think Harry Potter is a bit beyond that.

Yeah, I'd say teachers going out on maternity leave now is more common than any other job.

What the hell does maternity leave have to do with anything?

...It indicates that teachers are by no means childless?

Yes...which is what I was saying?

feathercircle was agreeing with you, silly

I realized that afterwards. I am apparently really bad at reading subtext tonight.

it happens to all of us eventually, don't worry c:

That means they're getting pregnant and having babies. I see a lot more people leaving to have kids in the education field than, say, manual labor.

Unless the schools are making this decision (which they are not) this has no bearing on this conversation. Chances are, the reason education leave is that they can afford to.

I swear someone above said that most teachers didn't get pregnant and have kids, but in every field I've been in, I've seen more teachers leave to have a baby than factory workers/food service/administration/etc.

So yeah, it still relates to the conversation.

I think I thought your original comment was sarcastic. But now I think you were not being sarcastic and was just supporting my statement. Why is there not a sarcasm font?

Hahaha it's okay, I come off as sarcastic a lot. I'll have to work on that. ;)

We do need a sarcasm font. I vote for Comic Sans. :P

Was just thinking about this the other day. I don't recall any of the teachers at Hogwarts having kids, or really knowing anything about their lives. Most of them were just there to give guidance or be antagonistic. But then, the story is told through Harry's eyes, so I guess he might not think much beyond that.
