I wonder though - if Bella were a man, and ended up as a recurring character for a few more episodes, would fans be more lenient with the character? Because I've seen quite a bit of fic of equally awful male characters from other fandoms who seem to get a free pass with a lot of handwaving excusing their actions.

Disclaimer - I liked Bella. But I also think S3 was the strongest written season the show had (I know a lot of people disagree and think S5 was). I was keeping my fingers crossed for her coming back as a demon on Crowley's team.

Just jumping in here because of your season three opinions. I feel the same way! I don't think I've ever met anyone who shares my feelings about season three! Sorry. Didn't mean to hijack your comment. It's just nice to see another season three fan.

It's fine <3 I'm always happy to discuss my S3 love <3 Each season has their strong episodes, but I think the Writers' Strike really solidified S3. It probably helped that the season was shorter too and more to the point.

I agree that S3 was fabulous! I think the fact that it was shorter because of the writer's strike actually worked to its benefit.

For me, no. I dislike intensely that kind of 'i have powers/know stuff and i won't tell you!' kind of character that Bela (and Ruby) were. The kind of character that the writers don't really know what to do with and so derail the main characters so that the other one can 'show 'em how it's done' or win or whatever.

Gabriel was that for me, too. He was a damn archangel with all kinds of knowledge and he *could* have told the boys some things and actually helped them vis a vis the apocalypse. But instead he chose to be a dick and fuck them around and kill Dean off in front of Sam for literally months to 'teach him a lesson'....

Was so very pleased when he died.

Most every female character that's been on Show has been cool. Starting with Jess and going up through the season, Ruby and Bela were pretty much the worst. Everybody else - they had moments of awesome and definitely added to the show.

Are you kidding me? Jess was nothing more than a plot device. Bela and Ruby had personalities, at least.

No, not kidding you. Sorry - didn't like Bela, didn't like Ruby.

I have to agree about Jess. I like her in some of the fic I've read, but that's because she actually gets fleshed out and gets to have a personality.

'I was keeping my fingers crossed for her coming back as a demon on Crowley's team.'

I've read plotbunnies about this idea, and it's one of my favorites. And it's not like the idea is unfeasible within the show's canon - after all, not knowing Bobby was in hell, she was the only known character I could think of who they might be able to rescue for the trial, and I confess I got my hopes up.

But the larger part of fandom hates her, and so it shall never be.
