They're really easy to make, so you don't have to be talented or original to participate in fandom.

...no, really, that's it. There's nothing wrong with that and I'm not judging, but it's true. There's less true creative power put into them.

And it's a way of sharing mp3s without being blatantly piratey! Or at least, I have the impression that that train of thought is kind of attached to them. "It's not like I'm just uploading a bunch of mp3s! I'm uploading a fanwork, it's totally legit." Maybe.
