The casting in general, or just one particular actor?

And from what little I've seen, there's a lot of people who are obsessed about the books.

I CURR. I tend to regard the movies and books separately anyway. And I regard Hannibal Rising separately from the rest of the books because ...ugh. (Did you forget your own character had polydactyly, Harris?) I love both the books and ...some of the movies, ha, but they're really not the same.

I haven't watched the new TV series yet, but I wouldn't expect it to stick to the novels anyway. They can't really do that and make a serial television show work, especially when it's set prior to Red Dragon. (In order to make an American horror/thriller show work, they're going to have to invent a lot of drama that likely won't really jive with the books.)

No one cares about a series of best selling books? They are not exactly obscure there, OP.

Me either.

I don't want to seem like a book snob, but I seriously hope you die.

I can't believe how angry I am about this.

I know there are books, but I've never bothered to read them. And tbh, I think I'll keep it that way. lol.

I grew up loving Silence of the Lambs and I ADORE the new series.

And I wouldn't want to read the books and then retroactively dislike the show.

<_< Just because this is kind of a nitpicky secret, I must nitpick your choice of phrasing. Anthony Hopkins didn't play Lecter in the original movie. Brian Cox did, though the name was spelt Lecktor, for some reason. (Manhunt, 1986, adaptation of Red Dragon.)

I'm a book purist myself but personally I think Graham and Hannibal are both well-portrayed.

What I do think silly is how Freddy Lounds and Alan Bloom are now girls. The weaselly reporter is now a hot redhead, etc. Jack Crawford being black isn't that huge a deal because he's still the same person but if you're changing the gender you might as well just make up a new character at this point.

I *just* started A Song of Ice and Fire, and I already prefer it over Game of Thrones. I actually know what's going on, and have a basic frame of reference for time passing, and actions are explained...

So I suppose I'm always going to be a book purist. :P

Do you hate all the casting, or just Mads Mikkelsen? I usually like him, but I'm a bit undecided on him in this role. But it's only been a couple episodes. And I'm enjoying the show overall! It's been a really long time since I read the books though, so they're really not fresh enough in my memory to judge the casting based on them.

I think the books are wonderful (or at least, Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs are wonderful, and Hannibal has its good points, and we can pretend that last one doesn't exist), and I love what the tv series is doing.

I've never understood what people like about the Hopkins version of Lecter, though. To me, Hopkins was overwrought and unconvincing, and had none of book!Lecter's charisma. The new tv version is a lot closer to what I always saw in the books.

Half the reason I'm watching the show is for Mads Mikkelsen because the casting there just sort of fascinates me. I love that it's the complete opposite of the Lector we've seen before, since trying to go in the same direction would probably end up with someone playing Anthony Hopkins playing Hannibal Lector.

Though I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the books. I quite enjoyed Silence of the Lambs but didn't find any of the others all that compelling.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I care about the Harris novels! Granted, I pretend there are only two, since after Lecter's character gained huge popularity after the movie, I feel he got severely overused in the books.

Mikkelsen's Lecter is very different from Hopkins'. Nobody was going to touch Hopkins' in SotL. It was impossible, like trying to capture a perfect moment.

That being said, I like Mikkelsen's more subtle portrayal. He's not nearly as charming as Hopkins, but I'd rather have the gentility than the manic and ham that followed in some of the later movies.

Also, my own head!canon is that he does let loose a tiny bit more on occasion once he's found out. And that he'll probably become more charming and mischievous over time as he gets more comfortable around the rest of the main characters.

But if you don't like it, then you don't like it! Some things are felt at a gut level.

I reread Red Dragon and SotL right before watching the first episode, and I was AMAZED at how much dialogue was drawn from those two books. Good choice too, as it was largely character and relationship-defining stuff. I fell like there's a great love for canon in this show.

I hope you give it a second chance? I hope there's more people in this fandom than the newcomers. I want people who care about the Harris books!

I don't know what you're on about--the casting on that show is phenomenal. In fact, I couldn't care less about the novels/movies, and I'm only watching because of how many actors I adore are on it.

If it bothers you, don't watch. But still record it on your DVR, if you don't mind; I don't want NBC canceling another show I like.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Weird. I never like Hopkins in this role, especially after Silence of the Lambs-- embarrassing overacting and scenery-chewing, the inane catchphrases ("Goody goody!") that apparently were his own idea, etc. Just, ugh. So terrible.

Although to be fair, Hannibal was a pretty awful book, too.

I hope you hated the Hannibal Rising novel as much as the rest of us did then, anon. What a steaming pile of shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
til that hannibal was a book first. never heard of them ever

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the books and I fucking love the new show + casting. Hopkins will always have a special place in my heart, but I have to say, so far Mads is doing a great job.

The show has surprisingly many details from the books, too. If you're a fan of the books, give the show a try if you haven't already.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Other than the genderswitching and the much different role that Dr. Bloom is playing now, it's surprisingly very close to the book (even pulling lines from it!). I've been rather pleased by it.
If you adore the books, I'd suggest watching it. It's certainly my favorite book series. (Plus all those wonderful little easter eggs hidden in corners that are references to future scenes... gah, it gets my little book nerd going!)

And as another anon said, even if you don't care about watching it, still DVR it please.

I saw the pilot. I'm still mulling over whether this show is gonna be good or not...
