That's a lovely secret; it's great when a book touches you so much.

I'd love to name a child after my favorite book heroines, but somehow I think people would think Esther was too old-fashioned, haha (and there's all the religious connotations there).

I'd say go for it, Esther is a great name and the book isn't all that religious despite being in the Bible

Yeah; it's definitely one name I'd love to give a daughter if I had one. It would be kind of funny, too, if my religious family connected it to the Bible and I was like "no, I named her after Esther Summerson from Bleak House," haha.

I ponder sometimes whether I could actually go through with it and name my son Charles Wallace, if I were to ever have one. The Time quartet was so important to me as a kid and I loved character so much, but it's such an ugly goddamned name haha

Oh, the Time Quartet! Damn, that takes me back. I think it's the book that inspired me to write original stuff, more than anything else. I actually cried when she died, and damn if that doesn't make me feel old.

I knew a girl a few years younger than me named Esther (she would be 25 or so now) so the name's still around.

I'm so, so tempted to use Daine as a middle name, but when you'd have to be constantly correcting people on the spelling, I'm not sure if that's fair to hang on a kid.

Liviana, on the other hand, is definitely on my first-name shortlist.

Middle names rarely come up, though - unless you forget the comma on the birth certificate (at least in my country).

Daine <3 I think it's a lovely name.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love it too - I just hate the thought of her constantly having to say 'No, it's d-A-I-n-e'. (Other anon has a point in that it would primarily by shortened to an initial anyway and would rarely come up, though.)

It's still a pretty popular name, you should go for it. Esther Summerson is a great character. I just adore the version they did on the BBC, Anna Maxwell Martin glowed in that part. Not to mention Gillian Anderson, together they were superb.

I probably will, or at least would bring it up with my SO or who I was raising the child with.

I've been rewatching the BBC version recently, actually (I have an urge to reread the book, but I need to put that off until after finals). Anna Maxwell Martin is incredible, Gillian Anderson was amazing, the whole cast was perfect.
