I think this is a really beautiful secret, OP.

This one makes me smile. Blue Castle is a great book. And I never really thought about it like that, I s'pose because I haven't read it in ages.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Welp. I thought I'd read them all. THANK YOU OP!

That's a lovely secret; it's great when a book touches you so much.

I'd love to name a child after my favorite book heroines, but somehow I think people would think Esther was too old-fashioned, haha (and there's all the religious connotations there).

I'd say go for it, Esther is a great name and the book isn't all that religious despite being in the Bible

I ponder sometimes whether I could actually go through with it and name my son Charles Wallace, if I were to ever have one. The Time quartet was so important to me as a kid and I loved character so much, but it's such an ugly goddamned name haha

I knew a girl a few years younger than me named Esther (she would be 25 or so now) so the name's still around.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so, so tempted to use Daine as a middle name, but when you'd have to be constantly correcting people on the spelling, I'm not sure if that's fair to hang on a kid.

Liviana, on the other hand, is definitely on my first-name shortlist.

It's still a pretty popular name, you should go for it. Esther Summerson is a great character. I just adore the version they did on the BBC, Anna Maxwell Martin glowed in that part. Not to mention Gillian Anderson, together they were superb.

Blue Castle is among my favorite books ever and I think there is zero shame or embarrassment in naming your daughter after Valancy! In fact I think it's pretty awesome.

Well now I wanna read this book, based on that cover and this secret. I always wanted to read Anne of Green Gables too so I could watch the Takahata anime

I wouldn't wish that name on any kid

But at least you had a good reason.

(Please say you call her Val at least)

Does the name Valancy even exist anywhere other than that book? I've never heard it anywhere else, even on huge name database sites (yes, I've looked before...) In any case, I think you have great taste in names and books. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't discover The Blue Castle until I was about Valancy's age, and while I can't say it saved my life, it fell into my hands at a time when I really needed its message that it's never too late to make a life of your own. If you ever named a child Valancy, OP, trust me--there are plenty of people who would smile to themselves because they get it.

One of my favourite books every - it changed my life too. How lovely that you've named your daughter Valancy!

Trust me, I'm sure a certain subset of people who know your daughter already know. :3

If I ever met a Valency IRL I'd be all "The Blue Castle!" right away!

I only just recently found out that this book exists but it's definitely going on my to-read list! Especially since I have been collecting public domain books on my Kobo, including the first Anne books since I haven't read them in ages.

Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Valancy is a lovely name, OP. Some might think of chemistry rather than Montgomery when they hear it first though, haha.

I loved The Blue Castle. I think I've read it more often than any of her other books. But I really dislike the ending; it's such crap compared to the rest of the book. Go away, random millionaire FIL!

This is a sweet secret. I haven't read the book, but it's lovely to read secrets about a book/movie etc. changing someone's life for the better so profoundly.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's a beautiful and intriguing secret. I think I have a new book on my list to check in the library.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
OP I've just downloaded this for my kindle, thanks for reminding me about it, I've read it years ago but you've made me want to look at it again.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you pronounce "Valancy"?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
This is a wonderful secret, OP. I'm going to have to look for this book at the library (I was an Anne fan as a child). Valancy has a lovely ring to it.
