Eh. People are affected by different things; for instance, for me, the musical format makes it difficult for me to take the whole thing very seriously. It's just too far removed from reality, and it truncates so much story and characterization that it's even harder to connect with the characters because they keep doing things that make no sense to me.

On the other hand, I'm currently reading the book, and am awash in feels for just about everyone. But Victor Hugo's writing isn't for everyone, and I can see people getting bored with his little discursions into philosophy and history and being so frustrated they couldn't connect to the characters either.
