I wouldn't say I'm entirely unaffected by Les Mis, but I always have trouble with dramas that are very heavy handed, and Les Mis is definitely that.

I saw it onstage - well, part of it. I fell asleep less than halfway through (although I was a bit drunk at the time). My lasting impression=big snooze.

Eh. People are affected by different things; for instance, for me, the musical format makes it difficult for me to take the whole thing very seriously. It's just too far removed from reality, and it truncates so much story and characterization that it's even harder to connect with the characters because they keep doing things that make no sense to me.

On the other hand, I'm currently reading the book, and am awash in feels for just about everyone. But Victor Hugo's writing isn't for everyone, and I can see people getting bored with his little discursions into philosophy and history and being so frustrated they couldn't connect to the characters either.

Different strokes for different folks, although I wish I had the chance to go "shh!" at the guy who was TELEPHONING LOUDLY through the movie when I went to watch it. Dammit, I'm trying to listen to the songs!

The only version of Les Mis that touches me is the game.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS

Gotta spread the Arm Joe love.

saw it on stage. gave no shits. (but I don't like musicals no matter what)

didn't bother to see the movie. don't really care.

was sort of affected by the Liam Neeson movie with no singing. It was very nice.

but I am also highly unmoved by a lot of things. most things people normally associate with being moving or sentimental or powerful just don't do a thing for me. so I'm sure it's just the way I'm wired, OP. you don't have to "get" it, just accept that people like me exist.

eh, I saw the play when I was in high school and it was okay... and then I went to the movie with a friend who was IN LOVE with it and had to fake an emotional reaction for her just so she'd stop trying to explain things like I hadn't understood them (obviously the only reason why I wasn't crying). I can't deny that Gravoche's end was sad and the end of the movie was pretty cool, though.

Mostly I just wish the story had been about all the hot singing revolutionaries and less about Anne Hathaway begging for an Oscar and Hugh Jackman displaying the singing range of a toddler.

The singing of every line makes it too dramatic for me, and I end up laughing because I remember that skit where Josh Groban sang Kanye West's tweets. Then again, I also fell asleep during Chicago, so there you go. I can really only handle Disney musicals, and Avenue Q.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You would love Matilda, seriously. I'm just the same, adore Avenue Q, never really like musicals, and Matilda is one of the best things I've ever seen.

Eh, I was affected a little by it, but not in the way that turns me into the grossly emotional sobfest that I normally associate with someone who claims "I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE LES MIS OH MY GOD I AM EPONINE"

Like, glad you grew up and left high school, if you're really Eponine...

(also I keep seeing that text post on Tumblr that says "I laugh myself to sleep thinking about how Taylor Swift tried out for Eponine", and I always think "Gosh, I'd say it was actually perfect casting" but apparently I ~don't understand her character at all omg~)

I think Taylor Swift probably has a good look for Eponine, but she doesn't have the singing chops required. That is not to say Taylor cannot sing, but Eponine needs a BIG BELTING VOICE. I think the producers went in the right direction in going with someone who's sung the part onstage. All of which has nothing to do with character and everything to do with not wanting the songs to sound horrible. There was no need for another Emmy Rossum-POTO debacle.

Sometimes it's just impossible to give two shits about a character the way they've been portrayed. It can happen because of the way a writer, director or actor interprets a character; the way an actor performs; or just the way an actor looks. And a hundred different things will affect the way any given member of the audience perceives the performance.

I'm not sure I would have given two fucks about Les Mis if I hadn't already fallen in love with an old B&W film of the story.

Most people probably see Les Mis without even the background of a movie to go on.

Eh, different things affect different people. I personally have no interest in seeing it, but musicals aren't a big thing of mine to begin with, and I really, really dislike tragedies. (Only reason I've never watched Moulin Rouge in fact, despite adoring everything I've seen to do with it--prewarned for sad ending = no watching for me.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you like what you like.

I didn't get the 'hype' that my friends had over the movie or the musical. Then again, musicals aren't my thing, mainly because of how people sing in musicals. The way their voices sound bothers me, especially if it's constant singing. It doesn't matter if the plot is interesting or not. I can't stand constant singing in that way.

However, I'm still interested in reading the book. I treat it as a separate entity. Something like that.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing to get. People just have different tastes. Don't worry about them and just enjoy what you like (and let them enjoy what they like).

The Brick is one of my favourite books of all time, but I can't stand the musical. The singing just takes me out of the story. :/
