Meh, I liked Mickey. And Martha was my FAVORITE 10-era companion. That being said, I certainly don't think everyone who dislikes both characters does so based on their race.

Side-note: I never found their coupling to be a 'pair the spares' type deal. Though they didn't have any real interaction before we learned they were married, they did survive an apocalypse together in the series 4 finale and they have a LOT in common. They both traveled with the Doctor but CHOSE to leave him in order to forge their own paths. They both worked with groups after leaving the Doctor but eventually left those, as well. They both knew the pain of loving someone who was in love with someone else. There's also the hint that Jack offered them both jobs with Torchwood and they turned him down/it didn't work out. This might not make them SOUL-MATES 4EVER but it's certainly enough of a basis for a connection.

But see, the thing is, those are all things you've inferred from various facts in canon. We never SEE any of that. There's never any indication of any of it. In fact, prior to their scene together in The End of Time, do we ever even see them talking?

I get that you could IMAGINE a way they might end up together, but the show doesn't show us any of that. Which makes it a random, crap, out-of-nowhere pairing.
