I liked her on Law and Order: UK, not so much on Doctor Who. And I never warmed up to Mickey. But then, I was a Doctor/Rose/Jack shipper and he was just...unnecessary to that. Except for how he was in my favorite scene with those three...but after that I was ready for him to go back to London and leave us alone.

....there's a Law and Order: UK?

I..uh...did not know that.

Asians can be racist, too. Just saying.

I don't know how relevant this is to the thread, but I've seen spectacular racism among Asians too. I live in Malaysia, and everybody pretty much discriminates between Indians, Chinese, and Malays, and a lot of Malays believe Americans to be evil by default (not an exaggeration).

This is my issue with the term "POC", since it just...lumps every single race but white into one group. And obviously members of the same group can't be discriminatory towards each other, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
While that can be true - I certainly saw more racist behaviour whilst living in Japan than I've encountered anywhere else - what exactly does it have to do with the secret?

I wanted to like her more, but her mooning over the Doctor went on .... a bit too long for my taste.

(also, if I'd ship Micky with anyone, it'd with ... that guerilla/insurrectionist guy from the AU. I thought those two had more chemistry than Mickey/Rose did. :p

I liked Martha, but the romantic feelings really made it hard sometimes. :/

Also, wasn't that guerilla guy Parallel Universe Mick

Agreed on both counts. I don't care if the actor denies it - Mickey/Jake is my headcanon. XD

Nothing will convince me that Martha wasn't a total BAMF, but I know what you mean about Mickey. His entire personality revolved around other characters, so it didn't give him a chance to shine (or even appear more than completely spineless). The jump to the last scene where he married Martha and became an alien hunter was both unbelievable and reeked of Pair the Spares.

Um, it's okay to dislike characters for non-race related reasons?

I don't remember Martha conspicuously talking too much to villains in any episode other than Utopia, though. Although I admittedly haven't watched the Dalek two-parter in years...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
See I have a lot of sympathy for Mickey because I absolutely hated the way Rose treated him, and while the Doctor and Rose seemed to develop an unhealthy relationship based on co-dependence i like the way Mickey was developed in contrast.

I did think Martha was badass in the end but I agree her acting was a bit cringe worthy in the beginning. Also her relationship with Mickey was a ridiculous 'pair the spares' moment i could have lived without.

Fun fact: people of color can be racist against other people of color

This subject has been done to death so all ill say is since you can clearly see the unfortunate implications of your feelings idgy this is a secret or you felt the need to get defensive.

Man, more Mickey hate? I always had a soft spot for the guy.

As for Martha - I liked her less, she was too "polished" for me, and I didn't really find her convincing as a med student for some reason. That being said, she gets more hate than she deserves.

Martha was my least favorite companion of new Who. You're not alone in the "everyone calls me a racist because of this" category.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I find both of them to be incredibly annoying.

I also find it incredibly annoying that people might call me racist for saying that.

I feel for you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I liked Mickey. And Martha was my FAVORITE 10-era companion. That being said, I certainly don't think everyone who dislikes both characters does so based on their race.

Side-note: I never found their coupling to be a 'pair the spares' type deal. Though they didn't have any real interaction before we learned they were married, they did survive an apocalypse together in the series 4 finale and they have a LOT in common. They both traveled with the Doctor but CHOSE to leave him in order to forge their own paths. They both worked with groups after leaving the Doctor but eventually left those, as well. They both knew the pain of loving someone who was in love with someone else. There's also the hint that Jack offered them both jobs with Torchwood and they turned him down/it didn't work out. This might not make them SOUL-MATES 4EVER but it's certainly enough of a basis for a connection.

My dislike of Martha boils down to one thing, showcased perfectly in one of her own lines from the show. "You had to go and fall in love with a human... and it wasn't me", or thereabouts. UGH! Waaaaahhhh!!!! Boo-hoo! Poor Martha, forever alone, etc. I just wish she'd have gotten over her thing for The Doctor much quicker. Her pining away for him the entire time she traveled with him made her insufferable.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't a huge fan of either of them, either. Though I found Mickey really annoying in S1, he eventually grew on me and now I think he's not so bad.

Martha, though...I never warmed up to. First of all, yeah, as the replacement companion after Rose's tragic ending it took me a while to get used to her. And, I guess, her foolish mooning over the Doctor just really bugged me. I mean, it sucks to be attracted to someone who doesn't feel the same way, and she DID get out in the end (which made me respect her more)...but, still, meh. I just never loved her.

The thing that really DID bug me though was the random, out-of-nowhere pairing of Mickey/Martha. Wasn't she engaged to Tom Milligan at some point? Especially when you consider her Torchwood eps, that relationship seemed weird, timeline-wise. And then suddenly she's married to Mickey.

There are certainly non-race-related reasons to not like someone, but the random pairing of these two always bothered me. They were sort of just the "leftovers" from the Ten/Rose pairing, but still.

What I initially liked about their casting was how color-blind it was. Mickey and Martha could both have easily been played by white characters, but they weren't. There was never even a mention or an eye-blink of the fact that Rose had a non-white boyfriend. And though the Doctor didn't return Martha's affections, there was never ANY indication that it was because of her race.

So I really liked that about both of them all along...and then they just dump those two characters together at the end, out of nowhere, with ZERO buildup. I mean sure you can imagine a scenario where the two of them got together but on the SHOW, it came out of nowhere. Which always bothered me.

Wouldn't that be counterproductive, anyway?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-04-19 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I'm pretty sure liking someone JUST because of their race is only marginally better than disliking someone just because of their race.

As a fellow "PoC" (god I hate that term) I say, don't sweat it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I thought both Mickey (at least initially) and Martha were kind of screwed by the writing. Martha's crush on the Doctor would have been fine with me if it actually felt like it was about her and not more about RTD's desire to use it to wank over how the Doctor would never love anyone better than Rose. Sometimes the writing for it felt like bad fanfic. So I can understand why for some it was annoying. But I don't think disliking a black character automatically equates with being racist any more than not liking particular female characters automatically means misogyny is a-foot. The show certainly gave the audience reasons not to think much of Mickey particularly in those early episodes and sometimes those first opinions can stick hard.

I can't stand her because of her ages long unrequited crush on the doctor. I just found it annoying. i was proud of her when she finally decided to walk away. SO PROUD. But that was the only time. I didn't find her a strong character at all before then, no matter how often she helped save the world. She was in thrall to her feelings for him. I've been there. It's weak.

I liked Mickey, though. He seemed like a nice guy and I like that. And he changed and grew and I liked that, too. :)
