A lot of people seem to downplay the racism in Japan because it is rarely violent (although I did, unluckily, experience some of that), but it is pervasive and disheartening. I loved living in Japan - it's an amazingly interesting country, and I met so many wonderfully kind people. I'm often homesick for my life there. But the increased awareness, the longer I was there, of the huge amounts of racism and xenophobia was one of the main reasons I chose not to stay there longer.
