(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 03:06 am (UTC)(link)Martha, though...I never warmed up to. First of all, yeah, as the replacement companion after Rose's tragic ending it took me a while to get used to her. And, I guess, her foolish mooning over the Doctor just really bugged me. I mean, it sucks to be attracted to someone who doesn't feel the same way, and she DID get out in the end (which made me respect her more)...but, still, meh. I just never loved her.
The thing that really DID bug me though was the random, out-of-nowhere pairing of Mickey/Martha. Wasn't she engaged to Tom Milligan at some point? Especially when you consider her Torchwood eps, that relationship seemed weird, timeline-wise. And then suddenly she's married to Mickey.
There are certainly non-race-related reasons to not like someone, but the random pairing of these two always bothered me. They were sort of just the "leftovers" from the Ten/Rose pairing, but still.
What I initially liked about their casting was how color-blind it was. Mickey and Martha could both have easily been played by white characters, but they weren't. There was never even a mention or an eye-blink of the fact that Rose had a non-white boyfriend. And though the Doctor didn't return Martha's affections, there was never ANY indication that it was because of her race.
So I really liked that about both of them all along...and then they just dump those two characters together at the end, out of nowhere, with ZERO buildup. I mean sure you can imagine a scenario where the two of them got together but on the SHOW, it came out of nowhere. Which always bothered me.
