I wish fake tans in general would go away.

i don't get why most people assume that kinda dark-skinned anime characters are partially black, hispanic, or whatever; they're four times out of five japanese with a tan. for real, anime characters are japanese until stated otherwise.

but basketball...

Yeah. I think a lot of (western) fandom don't realise how darkly tanned some Asian people can be naturally and instantly go for the "they must be part black, etc." Maybe because most east-Easian celebs are really pale for whatever reason?

I hear it's a beauty thing, they find whiter skin more beautiful?

Recently it's seemed like there's a lot more explicitly non-Japanese dark-skinned characters in anime than there were when I was younger. Like, I remember it being a rarity to even see a darker-skin character at all, compared to, say, there being a whole village full of clearly black characters in a big title like Naruto as there is now. It was Cowboy Bebop and that's it.

What series, if you don't mind me asking?

It's been quite a while since I've seriously watched me some anime.

could someone explain this whole thing where the dojinshi events for this series keep getting shut down due to death threats?

That's pretty much it? Some guy sent death threats and poisonous material to various places that are connected to the author of the series, like his old high school, the anime studio, doujinshi events, etc. They still haven't caught him and everything's pretty much at a standstill. I think the dude has a grudge against the author for some reason, but nothing else is really known.

Oh goodness, it's actually really weird. Someone translated online posts allegedly made by the attacker here and the main motivation seems to be some combination of an old grudge against the mangaka, a basketball uniform fetish, and hatred of fujoshi. You'd have to read the link, I can't even describe it properly.

I'm probably gonna get shit for this but, why is it "problematic" that Japanese cosplayers get tans to cosplay this dark Japanese character? There are a lot of Japanese people that get ganguro tans too, and that's a cultural thing. I mean, unless you're talking about Western fans too but even then, this guy is Japanese so it's not blackface. I don't get what's so bad about fake-tans unless you just think they look bad.

I actually don't find it problematic for cosplay by Japanese people since he is a Japanese character.

But I do find a lot of heavy fake-tans look strange/uncanny (especially on white people).

Barring that I might have guessed he was part Indian solely because so many mangaka seem to have this thing with Surprise Indian Princes. But the dude looks pretty 100% manga/anime!Japanese to me, and if he wasn't I have a feeling it would have been mentioned by now.

Yeah... shouldn't they tan themselves to cosplay him? I mean it's like people putting on colored contacts...
Also, I'm gonna be honest and I'm probably the type of person you hate... but, doesn't matter. I will still want his D.

I still don't get how he's the most popular character. I mean, I like him, I like them all, but I don't get it.

It feels like I'm out of touch with fandoms. I used to be able to guess which pairing and character will be the most popular one right of the bat but lately I'm getting it wrong. Like here, I thought it will be Kuroko and Kagami/Kuroko. And it's Aomine and Aomine/Kagami. What.

lol I really think that depends on where you hang out. I've never seen Aomine/Kagami as that popular (on pixiv and tumblr). Various match-ups of Teikou characters are big, but so are Kagami/Kuroko. And let's not forget practically-married and adorable Taka/Mido.
