i don't get why most people assume that kinda dark-skinned anime characters are partially black, hispanic, or whatever; they're four times out of five japanese with a tan. for real, anime characters are japanese until stated otherwise.

but basketball...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think a lot of (western) fandom don't realise how darkly tanned some Asian people can be naturally and instantly go for the "they must be part black, etc." Maybe because most east-Easian celebs are really pale for whatever reason?

I hear it's a beauty thing, they find whiter skin more beautiful?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. Even you often see non-celeb women during summer walking around covered from head to toe (and no I'm not talking about Muslim women), sunglasses, holding parasols. Skin-whitening is also quite popular apparently. It certainly gives a skewed impression compared to people's natural skin tones.

Recently it's seemed like there's a lot more explicitly non-Japanese dark-skinned characters in anime than there were when I was younger. Like, I remember it being a rarity to even see a darker-skin character at all, compared to, say, there being a whole village full of clearly black characters in a big title like Naruto as there is now. It was Cowboy Bebop and that's it.

What series, if you don't mind me asking?

It's been quite a while since I've seriously watched me some anime.

Diverse stuff I've seen: Gungrave, RahXephon, Fullmetal Alchemist, Afro Samurai (of course, lol), the aforementioned Naruto (though the diversity doesn't hit until the middle of the second part, hundreds of chapters on), and Bleach (but I couldn't get through the damn thing long enough to recommend it on a quality basis, beyond the trufax that Sado is fiiiiine).

Diverse stuff that's on my "try that shit" radar: Michiko to Hatchin, Black Lagoon, Tiger and Bunny, and Tenjho Tenge. Probably some more than I'm forgetting, I haven't sat through a whole series in so long.

Michiko e Hatchin is great.

BLEACH has quite a few! There's Shihouin Yoruichi, Tousen Kaname, Zommari, Mila-Rose... that recently introduced Zeroth Division guy whose name escapes me... ^o^;

GOSICK also had one African character of importance, even though it's kind of a spoiler who he is (his race was a big secret and part of the solution to one of the bigger mysteries of the show).

The current Best Wishes!/Black and White series of the Pokemon anime has Iris as a main character (the girl in my icon xD) and there's also Gym Leader/museum director/archaeologist Aloe, who even has a 'fro. (A big, poofy teal 'fro, because Pokemon loves wacky colours).

Anyone interested in black and generally darker-skinned anime and manga characters will enjoy these lists, I think! </shamelessplug>

Oh awesome! Thanks for the link!

(I keep up with the Pokémon games, so I definitely know who Iris and Aloe and how fantastic they both are! Definitely some of my favorite Gym Leaders. I love how Aloe literally has the best job combo ever. In the games, the back of her Gym's a library. A museum in the front is beyond fantastic and THEN you add a library to it! Like how much more amazing can you get?)

[personal profile] inkedfeathers 2013-04-21 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome! ^^

(Yup, she has a library in the anime too! AND YES, she's just the most awesome ever. The anime doesn't mention her archaelogist gig at first, if memory serves, but later on, you see Fennel/Makomo and Juniper/Araragi working with an Archeops fossil and hey, Aloe's the one who sent it to them!

Aloe's just plain awesome, I love her. ♥ Iris and Aloe are definitely my two favourites for the region too, hands down.)

One of the major secondary characters in Durarara!! is Simon, a black Russian. (Whose character design is a tad unfortunate, but he's pretty cool.)

(Everybody else in the series is Japanese except for the Irish Celty, and a couple random white Americans who pop up to comment on things occasionally.)

Oh, man, tell me about unfortunate designs. The 1970's manga Black Jack is full of them. You get decent, well-written characters and every now and then, BAM, these characters get these big-lipped, bulging-eyed designs because Tezuka-sensei's art style was influenced by Flesicher Studios and other American animators of the time (he started doing manga during the war)...

Only it seems like he never got the memo that those portrayals were racist. Tezuka-sensei's clearly not intentionally trying to be racist as a lot of his stories deal with racism and other kinds of prejudice, but his manga were definitely a product of their times. ^^;;;

Yeah. Then the next several generations of mangaka were influenced by him, so you'll frequently see terrible, stereotyped designs, even though the actual characterization doesn't usually go that route.
