What's the context for this scene?

Guy's great aunt outs to him to her Church in an epic telling off of her homophobic pastor, which was written word-for-word on the show runner's memory of what his own grandmother did. It was actually very sweet and Josh Thomas (the show runner and lead actor) says it's one of his favourite memories.

This is a scene from Please Like Me where someone's Great Aunt publicly outs him without warning or permission. In church. During an anti-gay sermon. She even makes him stand up so she can point him out to the whole congregation.

well, what you could do is wait until the worst of the anxiety/stress it caused passes, so that you can have a calm, honest conversation with your friend

and honestly, if they disagree with you on something so important to your identity and wellbeing, do you really want to be friends with her?

Just tell the friend they fucked up

No, seriously, just say, "I'm sure you meant well but this actually really triggered me. Here's why:" and explain it. Be calm and be rational about it, but let that friend know that what they did hurt you, and make sure they know exactly how and why to minimize the likelihood of it happening again in the future. Yes, this'll stir up trouble, but it needs to be stirred up, for your well being, and potentially for her social wellbeing in the future.
