Considering the movie isn't out, you don't know if the storyline is a white dude saving the day. You assuming since it's a Cruise film, he's the hero. But what if there's a twist and he's not? You don't even know if he's even human in the film. He could be a robot or an alien who thinks he's human.

It's still a white dude saving the day. Dude it's a fucking Tom Cruise movie. He's going to be the 'hero'.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please. Tom Cruise practically invented the generic action hero. What was the last ~TOM CRUISE ACTION MOVIE~ in which he was anything but?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Collateral? With bonus man of color saving a woman of color.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I watched the film.

Then you know he's not exactly a run of the mill "white male."

****SPOILERS FOR THE FILM****

So he's a clone?
Whoopty-doo, he's still some white dude saving the day.

What if they'd told the story from the perspective of the scavengers? Or his wife, or his teammate? Or hell, even one of the drones?

Then you wouldn't have Tom Cruise as top bill. And that's what brings in the money from the audience. You can have a weak, redundant story but as long as Cruise is there, it will make money.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Tom hasn't been a top billing draw for YEARS. So where the fuck are you coming from?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Where are YOU coming from, anon? Tom Cruise is still a big draw and a lot of people will go to see it simply because the posters and trailers have TOM CRUISE all over them.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
Uhm, no Tom Cruise isn't still a big draw. Being recognizing that crazy Scientology dude that Katie Holmes got away from is not the same thing as being a box office draw. This movie is supposed to help save his career.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, haven't you noticed that people don't actually care about that shit?

It's interesting to people in a train wreck syndrome kind of way, and they'll go on and on about "oh gee he so crazy!" But take him out of the tabloids and stick him in a film, and he's just That Guy That Makes Movies I Like again.

A celebrity has to do a lot more than be in a weird religion and creep the fuck out of his own wife for people to abandon him.

DA. The box office numbers do not agree with you.

From Box Office Mojo (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3671&p=.htm)

At the beginning of the new century, Tom Cruise was arguably the biggest movie star in the U.S. ... Towards the end of that run, though, Cruise's public image took a hit due to some of his more eccentric behavior and his strong association with the controversial Church of Scientology. Since 2006, Cruise has only had a single $100 million domestic earner, which was the fourth Mission: Impossible movie in 2011. Excluding Rock of Ages and Lions for Lambs—both of which are way outside of Cruise's wheelhouse—his non-sequels have essentially settled in to a $75-$85 million range.

Yes, he is. On what planet are you from? His name is practically a brand.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen the film at all, but I suspect that if they'd told the story from the perspective of the scavengers, then you couldn't have the BIG REVEAL that - dun dun dun - everything is not what you think.
