Are you ready for Pacific Rim?

Oh, man. That trailer. At first I thought it looked stupid, then awesome, then really stupid again. It's Guillermo Del Toro though, and he delivers some pretty good movies.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a preview for a Will Smith version this year.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really think that counts, though. I mean it's Will Smith, he is for all intents and purposes, white.

Man.

It's not that I disagree here, but I think there's two issues here. The first is that "they always have a story where the white dude saves the day"; the second is that "they always tell the same story." What I'm saying is that I'd love to see more characters of color and more women and more interesting main characters in sci-fi flicks, but I'd also like to see more sci-fi flicks that aren't just the same story regurgitated over and over with slightly different visuals, and hence with nothing really going on other than visuals.

Believe me, there's always an audience for a good story. Be the change you want to see, and other people who were thinking along the same lines will join you.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
what's it like where you live? cos people who say ~be the change you want~ ~if you want a job done do it yourself~ don't live in the real world.

Considering the movie isn't out, you don't know if the storyline is a white dude saving the day. You assuming since it's a Cruise film, he's the hero. But what if there's a twist and he's not? You don't even know if he's even human in the film. He could be a robot or an alien who thinks he's human.

White dudes and Will Smith. I tried really hard to come up with an Asian (Hollywood) action hero, but I only know Jackie Chan and I don't think he's that active anymore.

I agree... in general. I know I've been told to swap my female characters into males or just rip out sci-fi elements to make them "better".

However, to be honest, the gender of the main character isn't why I'm not going to watch that movie. I'm not going to see it because the trailers made it look really boring and stupid to me. Since the movie hasn't come out yet I could be proven wrong. I'm fine with that. Heck, I would be delighted if I was.

Ah well, so it goes.

I agree that there should be more female and non-white protagonists in sci-fi, but "white dude saves the day" is not a single story, any more than "Hero defeats villain" is a single story.

Will Smith has been the hero a couple of times and there have been women, but yeah there's an imbalance.

100% agree, OP. I get a little sad when people shout opinions like this down with "bawwwwww you're ruining all my fun", etc. etc. How is variety ruining anything? It just means more variety of fun.

I probably wouldn't see a movie that wasn't about white dudes saving the day, sorry. I'm attracted to a lot of the white dudes who end up in these starring roles. I like "save the day against impossible odds! (but not really)" stories. It's a pretty basic formula, and movie goers want and expect it.

It's not that your stories aren't interesting. It's just that they may not sell.

Well, there was the story about the white dude getting battered to death by the skull of his son by the old god, but that was the only scene of the movie that didn't suck.

Also, there's plenty of great literary sci-fi to go around.

The fact that it's Tom Cruise (an actor we've all seen a million times before, in a similar type of role, even) makes it even worse.
miarrow: (Default)

[personal profile] miarrow 2013-04-20 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think generally most Tom Cruise movies would do better with a different lead and there's something fun about seeing that story with a different type of lead not also an entirely different story. So yeah. Love the genre, but sometimes, sigh.

Huh, now you've made curious as to how many sci-fi movies have a non-caucasian protagonist.
