Honor Harrington books by David Weber. First few are pretty good, then I start liking the sidestories better...

Oooh God yes! The books aren't brilliant literature, but they're fun, and here's a popular female star of a military sci-fi series, beloved even by the male, nerdy sci-fi crowd. It's almost unreal.
