I actually probably started avoiding books because I thought they were too stupid. Nothing in particular, but I do remember my reluctance to even touch the "Young Adult" section of Borders - I'll stick to my meaty and challenging literature, tyvm. I don't really care about post-apocalypses or fairies or paranormal romances or whatever. You're not ~fun~, books, you're just childish and dumb.

Yep I'm the same, I hate to admit I tend to judge people who only read YA.

I don't think it's really a defensible position at all and I don't think it's something you can judge people for.

It really didn't read as judging to me, so your reversal seems not so much mirror-y, to me, at least. I'm genuinely baffled over the response to that comment.

The fact that it basically paints all YA books as childish and dumb is pretty judgmental, the same way that OP stating that lit books are pretentious was judgmental. Both positions are people trying to pass off their own personal taste as superior while also painting incredibly broad groups of books with the same brush, which is dumb.

Ayrt was right: my hope in writing this was that OP would see how his/her post could have come across as insulting. But, apparently, OP is not like most people and does not see this sort of thing as insulting, whereas s/he finds it incredibly insulting when people take offense at something s/he has said.
