The Invention of Lying has a really fun opening, and some interesting stuff, even if the rules of the world are not that consistent (someone early on says something incorrect, is corrected, and admits that it was incorrect. When the main guy starts lying, why don't people point out some of what he's saying is just plain wrong?) But a fun premise, a decent half of a movie.

Then it dives into the most heavy handed religious satire imaginable and tries to make a heartwarming romance out of two thoroughly unlikeable people. Ugh ugh ugh ugh.

Agreed on this one. This is probably the movie I've been the most disappointed with to date. Funny parts just couldn't outweigh the general horribleness of all the characters (and, by the way, I refuse to believe everyone would be an absolute asshole if lying was never a thing.)

What really bugged me was that the "genetically perfect child" thing had absolutely nothing to do with lying! Even in a world with no lies, tact, or social boundaries, people would still find different things attractive. Making your female lead some weird eugenics freak does nothing for the themes of this film!
