They wasted a perfectly good plot!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
What are some instances you can recall of writers setting up a fabulous plotline or character or potential situation only to resolve or execute it in a less-than-impressive fashion?

I know there are SO MANY but my brain is drawing a blank. I hate it when that happens. :\

River Song in every episode except Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead.

Angel. Season three, half way point.

Wes had his throat slit and was dying with no one knowing where he was. Cordelia is off being romantic with Groo. Conner was just kidnapped and taken to another dimension.

A set up to an potentially awesome storyline. But what came after was out of character for almost every character and led to Angel jumping the shark. The show was never the same after that.

- I really wish Tasha Yar hadn't died in Star Trek TNG

- I really wish that instead of the specials, the Tenth Doctor and Donna got another full season for 2009 in which a lot of demons were worked through and laid to rest in a nice organic fashion.

- I think the way the 'Odo becomes human' storyline was handled was really disappointing. I mean, it was kind of dumb to begin with, but if you're gonna do it, at least let it have an impact

- I wish River Song had basically ANY other backstory

- I wish Gideon had lasted longer on Criminal Minds. I loved the way he left, but I wish we'd had more of him.

- I wish Parallax had actually been Hal Jordan instead of a giant yellow space bug from nowhere possessing him.

You know what's weird, is I just realized that I don't really count Tron (either of them) as stories. My brain thinks of them like I think of an encyclopedia or a history book, because I like it for the vast amount of worldbuilding and potential the world has, not because the primary story is any good.

That explains a lot, actually.

The only time I have ever fully agreed with the Spoony One is where he said that the Tron sequel completely UTTERLY failed in doing anything new and inventive with the concept. What we can do with computer system now FAR outstrips what was even conceived back when the original Tron came out, and it would have been so cool to see anthropomorphized versions of the internet, DDOS attacks, viruses, wifi, and more.

And, y'know, Clu could have been a serious threat by trying to take over the world's computer systems. Why the fuck would he try to take it by physical force when he could have us all by the throats just by threatening to destroy the electronic world market?

In Supernatural, I'm still wondering what happened with the weapons of Heaven after Castiel got a hold of them.

In Spooks, the writers missed a huge opportunity with Lucas and his relationship with his Russian captor (can't remember the name, it's been a while since I watched it).

I'm also left wondering what happened with Reid's headaches in Criminal Minds, as that seemed to just fizzle out.

There's another huge one that always bugs me but I can't remember what it is right now.

I made a secret about this that got posted a week or so ago, but:

Genderswapping Ji and Aysa. The whole "rough'n'tumble guy and calm and wise girl" thing is just so fucking overdone, and it would've been nice if Blizz had openly acknowledged that girls play Horde, too, instead of sending the ~wise~ and ~just~ lady over to the side of moral superiority.

I also wish they'd kept the Pandaria allegiances the way they'd accidentally reported it - with the wise Jinyu going to the Horde and the crude Hozen to the Alliance. Don't get me wrong, I love the Hozen and think they're hilarious, but I'm getting a little tired of Blizz sticking to its overdone formula. WE GET IT, BLIZZ. THE HORDE IS FULL OF UNCIVILIZED, SHIT-SLINGING LITTLE BRATS. THANKS FOR NOTHING.

/might be a little butthurt, yes

Harry Potter: There was so much emphasis put on Voldemort and Harry's wands and how they had phoenix feathers from the same phoenix. Along with an entire chapter dedicated to it. Then that gets thrown out the window in book 7 with all the wand switching...

The movie The Adjustment Bureau. A fascinitaing premise used for the service of an utterly generic romance plot.

IN TIME.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhhhhh damn you Andrew Niccol.

i loved the concepts behind the movie and the aesthetics, but it was so poorly written and acted, he just wasted all that potential.

now i have to wait and hope that someday someone makes a remake of it that's better than the original.

In SVU season 13, Benson started dating a prosecutor, they specifically mentioned that they'd have to disclose their relationship to HR at some point, and then suddenly he's overseeing an investigation into her past cases and now it's a conflict of interest (because it wasn't before?) so they break up and he's never heard from again. I mean, it was never what I'd call a fabulous plotline, but it didn't have to be such a complete waste of time.

I've talked about it here before, but "The Bishop Revival" episode of Fringe opened so many doors that they never returned to. Walter's father was an Allied agent working in Nazi fringe science?! I want to know everything about it, you guys. It's not like the Massive Dynamic mind control/cloning project in "Of Human Action" (which is also interesting, but mostly resolved within the episode). With how HUGE the theme of father/son relationships was in the show, I wish we could have found out more about Walter's relationship with HIS father. How did Hoffman turn up in the modern day without aging a day?

Season 2 of Fringe is full of threads they could have followed up on- yeah, no one liked Amy Jessup but what about her religious link to The Pattern? Or "Northwest Passage" which some people thought at the time might have been a backdoor pilot for a Fringe spinoff about Martha Plimpton's character.

The Invention of Lying has a really fun opening, and some interesting stuff, even if the rules of the world are not that consistent (someone early on says something incorrect, is corrected, and admits that it was incorrect. When the main guy starts lying, why don't people point out some of what he's saying is just plain wrong?) But a fun premise, a decent half of a movie.

Then it dives into the most heavy handed religious satire imaginable and tries to make a heartwarming romance out of two thoroughly unlikeable people. Ugh ugh ugh ugh.

Iirc, Mark Twain's sole fantasy story basically ended with him going 'Welp, I don't know how to write myself out of this corner. Sorry! /ends'.

On one hand, I thought that was awesome because [in addition to having a female lead] he at least was admitting to not knowing what to do, instead of copping out..but it was also a little annoying.

zuko going with azula in the second season finale

after all the times she tried to kill him and iroh, all the lies, etc.

it would have been cooler if he had been his own faction instead of joining the gaang like it was teased up to the second season finale

and speaking of that episode, i kinda wish aang had actually died for real

the titular hero in a kids show not making it? yessss

Everything Matt Fraction does. Ideas are the only thing he can do well, and it's annoying because you think "That sounds interesting ... " only to find out it's Fraction.

Community's Darkest Timeline has just been used so poorly everywhere except its introductory episode. It's sad because I've read great fics of it and it has so much potential but canonically it's just shit.

Romeo X Juliet: Basically an anime where the Shakespeare story was changed into this awesome fantasy setting and expanded the family feud to the point that the Montagues launch a coup d'état on the ruling Capulet house and nearly wipe them out. And it even added in some plotlines from other Shakespeare stories, like Juliet pretending to be a boy. I thought the story potential was awesome.

But noooooo, they fucked it all up with stupid bullshit, idiotic plot twists, an ironic lack of understanding how monarchical systems work, and never really using the fantasy setting except at the last minute where Juliet HAD to sacrifice herself in a ritual to save everyone's lives. Romeo was just collateral damage who could have easily escaped alive. WAY TO MISS THE POINT OF THEIR DEATHS, ANIME.

(Shit, I forgot some!)

JASON. EFFING. TODD.

They started out great with Under The Hood. But then some writers didn't like the idea of fans actually agreeing with a morally gray character, so they turned him EEEEEEVIL. Because apparently moral ambiguity can't exist in one of the 'grittiest' superhero comic books around.

The next thing? The New DC Universe. It's a somewhat controversial idea, but it could have worked if they neatly streamlined everything. But they didn't. The timeline is all over the place, characters cease to exist, character development is undone and relationships are unraveled. They wanted to make things easier on new fans, but apparently fuck you old fans!
