I hate the catchphrase, too, but then again, I just don't care for the character in general.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually like the catchphrase, but only when used by other characters in subsequent iterations of the Trek franchise. ("I'm a doctor, not a doorstop!" was the best line in First Contact.)

I love the story that Robert Picardo got the part as the EMH in Voyager because he ad-libbed "I'm a doctor, not a nightlight!" in audition. I've no idea if it's true or not, but I like the story.

If that's true, it's amazing.

If that's not true, it's still hilarious.

I think it's way overdone (to the point of sometimes being annoying), but I find some of them pretty funny.

You're doing it wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we add "I'm a billionaire, playboy, genius, philanthropist" to this fucking list?

The line was funny.

Now it's not.

That was the first thing I thought of after reading the secret.

But somehow it's even worse. "I'm a doctor" is his canon catchphrase at least. "I'm a billionaire, playboy, genius, philanthropist" was used once in canon. Once. And yet, every single fanfic reuses it...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
God, I didn't even like that line in canon and now it's everywhere... EVERYWHERE.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I love McCoy :)

Me too. :D Then Kirk. I only sort of like Spock. :X

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! I don't really like nu!Spock. Old Spock is ok.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
The new Spock is just an asshole and he doesn't have the redeeming qualities old!Spock had. Also ZaQ's Spock face bothers me.

We'll agree to disagree, but I applaud your used of 'wellhelm scream' <3

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I only like it because of this video from Starship Voyager. :D

Nothing makes me happier than when someone cleverly works the line into fic, so I do not relate. I also love it every time in canon as well, idgaf.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
+1

If McCoy had used it once in canon, then I think it'd be a different kettle of fish, but it's a genuine running gag in canon and blaming authors for using it as well is pretty silly.

I've seen similar complaints recently, but I really haven't been seeing it in fic any more often than I ever have. Maybe this is a tumblr thing? I don't really keep up with that corner of Trek fandom, admittedly.

Wilhelm scream, LOL.

I like the catch phrase, but it's got to be used well and not overdone.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
To me, this is typical of beginner's characterization, where writers think characterization means running through all the catchphrases and facial expressions. It's become traditional to use it in the movies, but that's once every four years (*sigh*) so it's more of an "oh, yay!" than an "ugh, no!"--at least for me.

But it's a trade mark of the character. And I personally LOVE IT~!!!
