Nothing makes me happier than when someone cleverly works the line into fic, so I do not relate. I also love it every time in canon as well, idgaf.

If McCoy had used it once in canon, then I think it'd be a different kettle of fish, but it's a genuine running gag in canon and blaming authors for using it as well is pretty silly.

I've seen similar complaints recently, but I really haven't been seeing it in fic any more often than I ever have. Maybe this is a tumblr thing? I don't really keep up with that corner of Trek fandom, admittedly.
