You might hate it, but it makes for an excellent shorthand when trying to distinguish a new idea from something that already exists. Mirror!Kirk, for example, specifically references back to the Mirror universe, and in situations where you have both Mirror!Kirk and Kirk, it's handy to make distinctions.

That's just one example, but in short: it saves time for everyone to just be able to attach an adjective to something.

What's the problem with just saying the story is about Mirror Kirk? Isn't that clear to most everyone?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, what about meta discussions about the differences/similarities between Mirror!Kirk and Kirk, for example?

Or the a/b/o (d/s, etc.) character tags on AO3? I have next to no interest in the a/b/o-verse, save for some specific character/gender variations; tags like "alpha!character" are a godsend for when I'm in the mood for that kind of fic.

I think it's also one of those inexplicable things that the internet caught on to. Like cats. When explaining how you fail at biking, why would you use a gif of a cat falling off a bike rather than a corgi falling off a bike?

Also, if anyone has gifs of corgis or cats falling off bikes, you're welcome to post it here.

Thank you! I've been so busy this semester that I haven't been very active, but when I do drop by, I tend to bring a veritable treasure trove of random pictures and gifs.

For that specific example, maybe. But when the universe isn't quite as established or named, how do you distinguish "character who murders for fun" versus "character who murders for necessity"? Dark!Character vs Character, generally, and this is kind of an important distinction to make when there are different interpretations or continuities.

If you want a different example, we can use Bruce Banner/the Hulk from Marvel. Sometimes, his alias is David, sometimes he goes by Robert, sometimes he goes by Bruce. They all have their basis in some form of canon, but they're also used just as a name (alias). So, there's a difference between David!Banner and David Banner. The first is used mainly in mistaken identity fics, while the second is used more in Hulk TV show fics, but they can still be confused. :)

Also when genderswaps are used. When I was heavy into the Kirk/Bones shipping for Nu!Trek (there's that too), it was girl!Kirk or girl!Bones. Or it was fem!Kirk and fem!Bones.

Because these tags started on sites where a space between words made a new tag. So the tags needed to be together to be filtered. And now it's a convention. Welcome to real life. It's what humans do.

We live in the future now! Those styles are outmoded and archaic! I throw off your false conventions, society! I am the new Prometheus. Of fandom.

I agree. I like how it looks and how it reads and just overall it's a very efficient, beyond succinct way of making a distinction.

Overuse is always going to be irritating, some people are always going to take things too far, but used sparingly it's good clean fun.
