Incidentally, does "S!B" mean "Secret!Because" or "Secret!Bonus"? I never did understand some of the shorthand of this comm.

Mathematics is one of my greatest passions, and I find exclamation marks used to signify a quality of a character/an object cute.

I personally feel that every part of language, either spoken or written, deserves to exist. Obscene words, deliberately wrong spelling, tHIS st ??yLe, everything. Language is a structure which is in constant development and constant motion. Some people will always dislike some of its parts; but it doesn't make them bad or useless.

IMO, of course. And you're entitled to your preferences. I can only express my sympathies in regards to the fact that you constantly encounter something you hate so much.

That's one of my favorite things about fandom. It was also one of my favorite things about math. Oops?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You might hate it, but it makes for an excellent shorthand when trying to distinguish a new idea from something that already exists. Mirror!Kirk, for example, specifically references back to the Mirror universe, and in situations where you have both Mirror!Kirk and Kirk, it's handy to make distinctions.

That's just one example, but in short: it saves time for everyone to just be able to attach an adjective to something.

I love the exclamation point for reasons that I cannot understand. I just like the way it looks. But to each their own :)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I love factorials, especially when they're in a series. They are the single coolest thing about math notation, but, more importantly, they teach you that exclamation points are not to be used lightly. >:|

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...At least you know it's a ridiculous thing to be angry about.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"THREE!"

"Don't shout that!"

"THREE FACTORIAL!"

"Don't shout that either!"

"Three factorial."

"That's better."

Aw, math can be fun!

The apostrophic concatenation seems less affected to me than using Initial Letter Emphasis ... the apostrophized phrase also prevents, perhaps, line breaks between the modifier and its noun.

I see abbreviation to B!S or S!B or N!S as useful because such contractions take up less space. More room for the content of the secret perhaps allows the nonner to use a larger point size for readability.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG me too!! Hate hate hate it!!

In computer programming, is you write !secret, it means it's NOT a secret. When did the exclamation point become a grammatically correct way to express anything but surprise or possibly outrage at the end of a sentence???

I mean, why waste time typing, for example, 'Harry who's been sorted into Slytherin' when I can just type 'Slytherin!Harry'?

I think it's cute.

Though maybe that's just because it makes me nostalgic for the BSG days. I miss using 'Head!Six' and 'Head!Baltar' in weekly fandom discussions.

I also think 'Alt!Liv' is ten times better than 'Bolivia' or 'Fauxlivia' or whatever else the Fringe fandom came up with.

Can I just say that I love how many of the comments here are defending math? Your love of math pleases me, fellow f!sers. I was going to actually address the rest of the secret, but a) OP already knows their reaction is a bit silly and b) I think everyone else has already covered what I would have said.

I guess I'll be the odd one out because I completely agree with you that the exclamation point is stupid. Not for math reasons, though. A while back, I was taught that != means "does not equal", so to me, the exclamation point between two words should mean "NOT".

One example that hasn't been brought up is duplicitous identities. Like, Character A pretending to be Character B, or Character A stuck inside Character B's body. Going back to season one of Heroes, I remember Zane!Sylar and Nathan!Sylar. I could see the argument for using compound words or hyphenation like ZaneSylar or Nathan-Sylar instead, but just using the first word as an adjecting like Zane Sylar doesn't seem right, though I can't quite articulate why, and saying Sylar shapeshifting and pretending to be Nathan is just less convenient. The exclamation mark is just the way fandom seems to like doing this (though I do remember more compound word usage several years back).

It used to really bother me, too, OP, but then I sort of got used to it over time. Idk. I mean, it is sort of handy shorthand some of the time, but the "!" really just sort of bothers me sometimes, when I think about it. You could easily just say happy Cas or whatever. So, you're not alone - though for the most part, I've sort of accepted it as fandom speak and may have even used it a time or two (fandom!speak? lol).

I'm really baffled by the people claiming that programming has caused them to think that ! means "not".

Do they think that

STOP!

means "don't stop"?

That's got to make life pretty confusing.

And then to just mess things up even more, in some computer languages ! means "or", and ' means "not". (Ex: 1'=2) Once you start using one of those languages do you go around thinking that "don't" means "don not t"? And now "stop!" means "stop or"? (Stop or what, exactly? Stop or don't stop? Oh no, now we've drug Don and his Not T into things... as well as "we not ve", who- or whatever that is!)

In short -- give up. If you honestly think that computer programming has affected how you read English, then I honestly think you're delusional.
