I understand where you are coming from, OP. When you first come across something like that it can be hard to accept that what you used to know has been changed and twisted and other people see different things in it.
Fandom had taught me a lot about learning to accept things that seem 'different'. I've really enjoyed a lot of the thread, too.
I've grown to like the use of the exclamation mark in this way. It's handy! Everyone knows what it means. It conveys so much in one space. The exclamation mark has been reclaimed for good, hahaha.
I hope you can learn to rail against your prejudices and embrace it :)
