why am i not surprised a piece of shit like you would stoop to misogynist slurs

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
becalm, other anon. It will all be ok.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sexist? Definitely. Misogynistic? Not really.

Please learn the difference between the two before you start slapping labels at everyone, k?

Just 'cause you call someone a pussy doesn't mean you hate women, JFC. It's sexist as hell, but that's it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
sexism and misogyny are the same thing tho?

sexism against men doesn't exist

men are not oppressed by a gender system that sets them up as inferior to women in everything from the media to language itself

Oh man, not this again...okay, first of all, the anon you're replying to didn't say anything about men, so why'd you even drag them into it?

Second, "sexism" as it's commonly used outside of academia means discrimination against someone based on their gender, full stop. Just like "racism" means the same thing for ethnicity.

Sexism against men is a thing. Racism against white people is a thing. Widespread systemic oppression against these groups is indeed not a thing, but this is not what most people are talking about when they say whatever-ism. They just mean people being jerkasses to each other on the basis of gender, race, etc., without getting into the sociological technicalities. Please learn to recognize the context and respond accordingly.

And finally: discrimination against women (sexism) is not always the product of hatred or dislike of them (misogyny.) It's quite possible to think one group is better than another group (incorrectly, in this case) without loathing the one that's judged to be inferior. So no, they're not the same thing.

because i just knew somebody was going to pull the "b-b-but misandry!!1!1!!" bullshit if i didn't, and it looks like i wasn't far off

to your second point: "sexism" and "racism" are loaded terms and using them to describe the occasional minor negative reaction and discomfort members of a privileged group get from the ones they oppress (consciously or otherwise) equates such treatment to systemic oppression and is quite frankly as bullshit as the concept of "heterophobia"

language matters

and to your last point:
a) it is entirely possible for a person to use misogynist language even if they may not themselves be misogynist, just shortsighted enough to not be careful in their word choice
b) casual *isms like this are caused by subconscious, deeply ingrained cultural attitudes, in this case the patriarchy, of which misogyny is a cornerstone, so if someone repeatedly says gross sexist reeking-of-dudebro bullshit like ING has, well, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...

Language matters, but you can't arbitrarily impose your language on others and then say "I won."

That just doesn't work. All it serves to do is alienate whoever you're arguing with, which isn't really winning. Getting the other side to shut up isn't winning a debate.

Also learn to kyriarchy (though of course this would require a somewhat complex understanding of women's history in a western context which is sadly lacking just about everywhere on the internet).

all you're doing is saying "my opinions of what words mean matters"

You can be sexist to men. People who think its impossible for a single person or small group to be considered sexist against a male person are people who are regularly sexist to males.

Then they cover their pathetic asses by calling everyone else "horrible disgusting people" and "anti feminist" (or screech that they should die horribly) when they point out that being rude to someone for being male is actually sexist and sexism doesn't 'belong' to any gender.

They're normally a bunch of whining adult children as well so it does well to ignore them.

(I'm not saying people who actually speak up for female rights are this. Just the ones that are nasty rude hypocrites to anyone who isn't female/doesn't agree with them)

"Occasional minor negative reaction and discomfort"? How about a divorce court judge who openly espouses the philosophy "If a man still has enough money left to live on when I'm through with him, I didn't do my job right"? That is not a minor inconvenience, it's a person in power punishing every male who comes into their courtroom for the crime of being male by taking away their ability to support themselves. And while this is one specific circumstance, not all of society, and it's certainly not every judge out there, it's also not terribly uncommon.

(In case you're wondering, btw, I'm female with a dependent child and have been through a divorce, and I'm certainly not rich. I wouldn't have LET the court do this to my ex on my behalf. A fair share for the support of his offspring, yes. Everything that wasn't nailed down, hell no.)

Yes, taken altogether, men are privileged over women. Nobody with half a brain is denying that. This does not mean that cases of serious gender-based discrimination against men cannot or do not happen. They should not be used as an excuse to defend all male behavior or to claim that men have it equally as bad as women, but they also should not be dismissed or their existence denied. To do so is blind and terribly naive adherence to ideology at best, and flat-out dishonest at worst.

Except in schools, but yeah.

However, imposing academic definitions onto an argument conducted in colloquial language is the coward's way of trying to win an argument without addressing specific points.

Believe me, it isn't difficult to beat Noodle in an argument.
