That sort of happened to me, or at least to people I know. At college, I became friends with M through a LARP group on campus. We were class of '05. I live in the area, so I stuck around after graduation, while she moved back home halfway across the country.

While continuing to participate in the LARP group, I made friends with B a few years later. B was class of '11. After she graduated, we remained good friends and kept in touch regularly, so when M was putting together a tabletop roleplaying game over IM, I told her that I knew someone who might be interested: B.

As it turned out, M and B had met online in a fandom RP over on LJ before B had come to college (before I'd ever met her). It was kind of a weird coincidence all around.
