serious question about original game gay subtext

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Serious question. I'm a yaoi fan, and lesbian irl so what I'm saying is I'm always on the lookout for m/m or f/f subtext. But in FFVII, original game, the only gay subtext there seems to be is Cloud/Barret, though that's not really subtext because you can date him. Still, as far as unf unf unresolved sexual tension, that's the only m/m pair that comes to mind. I'll give you Cloud/Sephiroth, I like that pairing in a violent, rapey, or hero-worship kind of way, but how much of their dialogue was actually... sexy? Sephiroth didn't even recall who the hell Cloud was through most of the game. I'm all for Cloud gay!crushing on Sephiroth during the SOLDIER days, and Sephiroth could have fucked him then, but Sephiroth doesn't really seem interested in Cloud until he starts seeing him as a threat. Okay, I get it, the whole "puppet" and "good boy" stuff, hey, I don't need much.

But it seems like besides that, the most popular pairings are Zack/Cloud/Sephiroth in any shape, and Zack was in the original game for all of like ten seconds in a flashback, so it's hard for me to wank to. Then, Reno/Rude/Rufus, but with them, I don't see anything at all that is remotely sexual in their dialogue.

Again, I don't need much, and I agree that FF tends to be very liberal with the gay subtext - they know their fanbase. I'm not saying FFVII gay shouldn't be shipped, honestly, I just think the canon narrative very much ... lacks gay subtext that isn't Barret or (possibly) Sephiroth. Or the canon gay prostitutes in Wallmarket.

and I am a Aeris/Tifa, just to be clear I'm not judging pairings that don't have subtext outside imagination.

lmao my question was meant to be, what kind of gay subtext do you see in FFVII. where/why.

da

don't forget the honeybee inn :0

but, yeah, you have a point, the gay subtext was not very strong in the original game (i'm not sure why sephiroth/cloud was so popular before advent children)

Yeah yeah, I mentioned the Wallmarket gay prostitutes, forgot the inn name lol.

Actually, in a lot of ways I think FFVII is very bold in its gayness - I don't mean gay subtext, because yeah I don't think there's much to speak of per se, but in the Honeybee inn prostitutes (and they aren't the usual "effeminate gay", they're macho men, even if they are played for comic relief Cloud still doesn't act in horror and revulsion, he volunteered to be there after all), Cloud's crossdressing (and he really gets into it, actually, after the idea sinks in), Cloud's ability to kiss Don Corneo and say that Barret's his boyfriend, the fact that Barret is, imo, a character you can date in the game, and even if that's comic relief as well, there's real dialogue that does suggest Barret cares about Cloud and ambiguous flirting... Considering Japanese media prefers subtext but no canon, or "ew effeminate gay guy is hitting on protagonist lol".. I think FFVII is kinda interesting because it seems more normalized than compared to other games.

wow another rant, sorry lol

but at the same time, aside from Barret, I don't see much for gay subtext in the game... with the possible exception of Sephiroth/Cloud, which still didn't reek of "play it for the fangirls", at least not as blatant as in Advent Children. Actually, all of the "real" gay in FFVII didn't seem like "fangirl gay" as much as actual gayness, considering with the exception of Cloud none of the candidates qualify as bishounen.

I agree. Most ships I don't think have much basis in canon, so much as convenient and often powerful emotional bonds that I can work with, and the rest comes from fanon.

Although I seriously don't get any Sephiroth ship.

Also, I've long wondered what that whole wallmarket/cross dressing/don corneo/honey bee inn sequence was saying about Cloud's sexuality, on top of his more suggestive lines with Barret. You make a lot of good points about that, and it's one of the more interesting points in the game to me just because of how open and normal everything is there, and the choices that were open to player kind of floored me at the time.
